Les régions tunisiennes de Gafsa et Gabès subissent depuis des décennies les pollutions catastrophiques provoquées par l’industrie du phosphate dans lesquelles la France a une responsabilité historique. En soutien au mouvement « Stop Pollution de Gabès », un ensemble d'organisations et de citoyen·nes appelle à « la mise en place de mécanismes de contrôle des multinationales en terme de responsabilité environnementale vis-à-vis des populations locales. »

La colonisation française a lancé l’industrie du phosphate dès la fin du 19ème siècle pour fabriquer des engrais pour l'agriculture intensive, ou des détergents. Le déchet du phosphate, le phosphogypse, radioactif et bourré de métaux lourds, pollue l'eau et provoque massivement des maladies comme le cancer.
En Europe, à partir des années 80, les mines de phosphates ont été fermées suite à des études qui démontraient leur danger pour la santé et la nature. Mais en Afrique, les mines sont toujours en activité. Toute l'industrie du phosphate et les rejets de phosphogypse se sont concentrés en Tunisie, au Maroc ou au Sénégal.
Depuis mars 2025, Kaïs Saïed a même retiré le phosphogypse de la liste des substances dangereuses. Une fuite en avant vers toujours plus de pollution, d'empoisonnement des populations, et du vivant dans son ensemble.
