  1. Last night was our second lecture of the MSHI Volcano Naturalist program. The title of the lecture was Volcanos 101. The starting point was plate tectonics then burrowing into the regional setting. Then a focus on igneous rocks, petrology, minerology, geochemistry. It’s a complicated topic but was presented well. I can see it being very challenging and difficult to visualize for someone who has never had a class in geology. #geology #volcano #tectonics #Cascades #PNW #igneous

“The GEOROC Database (Geochemistry of Rocks of the Oceans and Continents) is a comprehensive collection of published analyses of igneous and metamorphic rocks and minerals. It contains major and trace element concentrations, radiogenic and nonradiogenic isotope ratios as well as analytical ages for whole rocks, glasses, minerals and inclusions. Metadata include geospatial and other sample information, analytical details and references….
    Current content of GEOROC:
    • 22,750 papers
    • 685,660 samples
    • 2,680,100 analyses
    • 39,334,100 single data values…”

  5. My two minor obsessions captured at the same moment. Here are pictures of my favourite bicycle, an old school build using a custom #DaveYates frame, resting against my favourite rock, a beautifully smooth #glacial erratic composed of a very hard, fine grained, mid grey #igneous rock with pale mm-cm sized plagioclase phenocrysts. Generations of bottoms have enhanced the glacial smoothing 🙂. Located in #MaxwellPark #Glasgow #geology #cycling

  7. Twinned #feldspar crystals
In a paving stone in #Exeter, United Kingdom, pound coin for scale.
Must have cooled slowly, allowing large crystals to grow, so #intrusive, not #extrusive / #volcanic.
    My #photo of an #igneous #mineral because I like #geology

  9. Some #DogWalkingGeology from last week. Spud is pointing out some nice layered gabbro-melatroctolite from the Ben Buie Complex in SE Mull. 😊 #Geology #Igneous

  10. Interesting #boulders in a roughly stacked #seawall
The southern part of the spit separating #Plymouth Harbor from Plymouth Bay has a seawall along the outer shore, above Plymouth #LongBeach. Without knowing where they came from, interpreting the boulders is sketchy. BUT nice coarse crystals in intrusions into #felsic rocks, including big #quartz chunks (top right photo) and blades of #biotite (bottom right).

  12. Above and upon #igneous #dikes

The feature sure looked like a #dike on #satellite view, and a ground check confirmed it. Probably a late #Triassic or early #Jurassic intrusion into #Proterozoic Dedham #Granite, as #Pangea rifted. At Black Rock #Beach, #Hingham, #Massachusetts, #NewEngland #geology USA.

Satellite view from #AppleMaps, #photo by me.

  14. Two ways here to tell which igneous rock is older 1. the younger one includes bits of the older one, and 2. The younger one is chilled to a very fine-grained margin against the older, colder one. 🤓 Dark basalt in contact with gabbro, Ben Buie complex, central Mull, this afternoon. #Geology #Igneous #Mull

  16. I’m on my way back home from the Maritimes. Here’s a shot of Grand Falls in New Brunswick. What an incredible bit of white water and geological prehistory. #waterfall #gorge #NewBrunswick #GrandFalls #geology #Stratified #igneous

  18. Interesting Earth-like🌍 geology on Moon🌔 : Large area of hot, high uranium + thorium rocks on far side of Moon likely to be large complex of remelted and/or fractionated igneous rocks, such as granites. Only broken fragments of such rocks found on Moon thus far. nature.com/articles/s41586-023 #LunarGeology #Geology #Granite #Igneous

  21. Rock on the beach at Barnum Point, Camano Island, WA. Looks like a granodiorite peppered with xenoliths. Igneous petrologists chime in. Likely weathered out of the till that caps the bluffs or a dropstone from floating ice on marine water incursion during the Everson interstade. Source rock provenance not known. Ref. Geologic map of the Juniper Beach 7.5-minute quadrangle, WDGER Geologic Map GM70. #geology #igneous #xenolith #iceage #glaciation #intrusive #PNW #washingtonstate #CamanoIsland
