AI Data Centers are toxic environmental waste dumps.
They are the tech industry equivalent of the Coal Industry's surface mining leaving environmental and health problems in their wake, and that often walked away from the responsibility of environmental cleanup.
The health and environmental impact of data centers include:
- excessive CO2 emissions
- air pollution and toxic chemical emissions including fine particulate matter
- waste water emissions
- e-waste
- excessive water usage
- excessive energy usage and impacts from energy generationEqually important, when the AI bubble bursts, we will be left with useless buildings and infrastructure that must be dealt with similar to the toxic waste from the mining industry.
The AI industry can't be allowed to declare bankruptcy and walk away from a cleanup responsibility, leaving the burden of toxic waste cleanup to local communities, as did the mining industry.
Laws on data center waste dumps are needed.
