  2. Environment Southland produced a major report on nitrate pollution in Southland’s groundwater which showed worsening levels at most sites they monitor. The report blames "intensive farming, notably dairying and winter grazing of dairy cattle."

ES sent copies in advance to Fonterra, dairy giant Open Country and DiaryNZ. ES refer to these groups as "stakeholders". Then they tried to bury the report without making any fuss, bunging it in an online portal with no press release.

    Luckily, the ODT found it.

Despite nitrate pollution being a major public health issue, ES didn't alert either Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) or WellSouth because "they did not have any contacts."

    Clumsy cover-up... meet gross incompetence.

As @phil_stevens said earlier, Environment Southland is the poster child for regulatory capture in NZ.

  3. Podcast Episode: The Most Important Lesson from Mutualism: Save Now

In the late 19th century, when workers in northern Chile arrived to work in the nitrate fields, there were no pension funds, no public health insurance, and no unemployment benefits. They had something more fragile yet more powerful: organized solidarity. It was called mutualism.

    What Mutualism Was

Mutual aid societies and workers’ associations were nonprofit organizations created by workers for workers. They emerged to cover needs the State at the time did not address: healthcare, death benefits, education, housing, and a basic pension. Their financing mechanism was straightforward: each member paid a monthly fee. Those funds went into a common pool used to support members in need.

At its peak, between 1891 and 1924, the mutualist movement was the most important social organization in Chile. It paved the way for trade unions, political parties, and the social legislation that governs labor today.

    The Paradox of Decline

The irony of mutualism is that the very social laws it helped advance eventually made mutual aid societies less essential. As the State assumed responsibility for healthcare, pensions, and labor protection, mutuals lost their core purpose.

Today, 223 mutual aid societies operate in Chile with approximately 40,000 members. Their benefits are largely limited to death allowances and burial space. The giant that helped build modern Chile now lies dormant.

    The Enduring Lesson

One lesson from mutualism has not aged: no one is coming to rescue you. Not then, not now. Mutualists understood this 130 years ago and built their own social security, contribution by contribution. They did not wait for the State or employers to act; they took action.

Today the context is different, but the principle remains. We live in a world of uncertainty, with inadequate pensions, rising healthcare costs, and persistent job instability. The collective response of mutualism is no longer available in the same way. The individual response of saving is.

Saving as an Act of Freedom

Saving is not for the wealthy. It is for anyone who understands that the future is built through present decisions. The power of compound interest—where saved money earns returns that generate further returns—works exactly the same with five thousand Chilean pesos as with five million. The only determining variable is time.

The question you should ask today is not whether you can save, but how much you can start saving now. Because the best time to start was ten years ago. The second-best time is today.

  4. Last month Greenpeace stuck a dead eye on Rakaia's big fish and the locals cried "vandalism!"

Well, Rakaia held it's famous fishing competition over the weekend. Four hundred people entered, and not a single fish was caught. It's the first time that's happened in the 40 years that the competition's been running.

The problem is mainly dairy, of course. Oversized water take permits reduce water flow, which increases water temperature, which kills fish. Gotta feed those pivot irrigators. Cram the fields with cows and the resulting nitrate pollution leaching into most of our waterways does the rest.

    They. Didn't. Catch. One. Fish!

  6. Southland has a drinking water crisis on its hands, caused by dairy industry pollution

Only 1% of domestic wells mapped were in areas predicted to have nitrate concentrations below 1mg/L and almost half (49%) were in areas predicted to have concentrations within a range of 3.5 to 8.5mg/L, with a further 5% predicted to exceed 8.5mg/L, with some of these above 11.3mg/L.

The maximum allowable nitrate in drinking water is 11.3mg/L, but the National College of Midwives has warned pregnant women about levels exceeding 5mg/L risking preterm birth and low birthweights and public health academics have said levels below this may be a concern, including as a cause of colorectal cancer.

Ms Prickett said any level above 3.5mg/L was indicative of “serious degradation of environmental health let alone public health”.

  11. Going to the #ShiprockFair, #KleeBenally Remembered the #UraniumDump on the Banks of the #SanJuanRiver

    By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, August 29, 2024

SHIPROCK, #NavajoNation -- "In his book published shortly before his passing, Klee Benally writes of going to the #NorthernNavajoFair and the #UraniumDump in #Shiprock that no one talks about. It is along the San Juan River, the same river that flooded this week, now eight months after Klee's passing.

"'The Northern Navajo Fair at Tsé Bit A'í (#ShiprockNewMexico) has been held for more than one hundred years,' Klee writes in 'No Spiritual Surrender: Indigenous Anarchy in Defense of the Sacred.'

"Klee describes how the fair each fall marks the changing of the seasons and the #harvest. He describes the neon glow of the carnival in the cold, dusty nights, and the #uniper fires that burn.

"All of this revelry is held right on #UraniumBoulevard just a couple miles from a massive 105-acre #Radioactive dump containing 2.5 million tons of #RadioactiveWaste on a site that was a former #UraniumMill (which is just 600 feet from the San Juan River.)'

"The Shiprock Uranium Disposal Cell studies showed that more than 1.8 million liters of #groundwater were contaminated with uranium, #selenium, #radium, #cadmium, #sulfate, and #nitrate.

"Now the #NavajoNation again is targeted by the #Nuclear Industry and #DebHaaland's radioactive agenda is being ignored.

"Speaking in Farmington, Interior Sec. Haaland said the transition to green energy in the #FourCorners region will be led by the #AtomicBomb industry, #LosAlamos National Laboratory, which has already poisoned #Pueblo lands in northern #NewMexico.

"There is no mention of the fact that there is no safe way to store #NuclearWaste.
Now, adding to the layers of deception, the U.S. #EPA is deceiving the public. The EPA doesn't actually clean up the uranium dumps and strewn #RadioactiveTailings from #ColdWar #UraniumMining on the Navajo Nation -- it only announces plans and promises to do it.

"#EricJantz, legal director of the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, told the Inter-American Commission on #HumanRights in March that the #EPA has not completed any of the cleanups.

"There are 524 uranium mine sites waiting to be cleaned up on the Navajo Nation. Zero -- none of these -- have been fully cleaned up, Jantz told the international commission.
The truth is people seldom talk about the uranium dump at Shiprock because there is so much strewn radioactive waste, and so many unreclaimed uranium mines, with radioactive waste strewn from Cameron to #MonumentValley, and across the Four Corners region.

"During the 1990s, on assignment for USA Today, I talked with #Dine' in #RedValley and Cove, south of Shiprock, down the mountain from where I lived. In every family, there was cancer. In every family, someone was dying of #cancer, or had already died, from cancer because of the uranium mining.

"One Dine' grandmother in her 80s was living in a stone home built of radioactive rock. We had a Geiger counter with us."

  12. If you want to learn how the Minnesota Nutrient Reduction Strategy is going ten years in, then virtually join the meeting this coming Monday!

The MPCA will give an update on nitrate and phosphorus levels in Minnesota streams and surface water. A lot of effort has been put into the better management of these two pollutants over the last decade, and there has been some progress. So, this should be an interesting presentation.

However, while there has been some improvement in phosphorus levels, nitrate levels, and thus nitrate pollution, has been harder to get under control. The vast majority of nitrate pollution in Minnesota comes from agricultural activities via non-point source pollution. This is a result of there being fewer regulations on the application of nitrate to the landscape for agricultural activities than for point sources, such as waste water treatment plants. Unless the regulation of non-point source pollution gets much more stringent, nitrate concentrations in streams will continue to be hard to manage.
