  2. A small victory this evening. I have managed to construct four home signals, with lanterns that emit yellow light. All that is left is to sort out connectors for the lanterns and to make two more servo cables.

The branch line baseboard already has two holes to receive two of these signal, the other pair are for the depot exit and the incline behind it.

The junction signal has not arrived yet. Or rather, it has arrived and I accidentally ordered the N Scale version in error 🤦‍♂️ so it has to go back.

  7. Today’s lunchtime project: nearly completed a prototype of an Arduino Nano based semaphore signal controller. The inputs (green terminals on the far side) are compatible with SigNaTrak’s SIGM20, so you just wire up red (or green) of a two aspect signal. The outputs are straight servo connections. The board requires 5V to work.

The Arduino reads a digital input and uses the value to decide if the associated servo output should be in one of two positions. Those positions are set by the adjustable potentiometers. If the servo isn’t in the right position, it moves to that position, but slowly.

This allows you to connect a small servo to a semaphore signal and drive it from the SIGM20 as if it were a two aspect red/green signal. The board actually supports three servos in total.

I’ll need two such boards to support all the semaphore signals I’m planning to install, they’ll cost me maybe £15 each in this prototype form.

That's where I am on my current project. It's not as tedious as indexing, yesterday's topic, but neither is it exciting – just a necessary accessory.

In this brief post, I share my workflow. In fact, this infographic does a lot of the heavy lifting.

  17. More progress with the model railway signals.

I designed a mount for the Train-Tech range of OO scale signals. The top surface is a perfect match for the signal base, then there’s a 12mm diameter plug that goes into the baseboard. Underneath is a stem to which I can tie-wrap a flat cable, making it immobile.

Install the signal on top, it’s a snug push fit. Then fix the cable in place and solder it to the terminals on the signal.

What we end up with is a very solid baseboard mount for the signal, together with a cable that has been immobilised to ensure reliability.

  22. One ground signal wired in, with a basic rule set up so that it is red when the point is thrown. Five to go!

The rules will be extended so that the ground signals only activate when shunting is taking place - I’m going to use some physical switches connected to an accessory decoder to indicate this on a per-platform basis (or per-corner of the station, not quite decided yet)

  27. The 3D printer is working again and the first platform is getting longer! Sadly the platform surface colour varies a lot, but this won’t be as noticeable once the canopies have been installed.

Equally importantly I’m hoping to get some ground signals lit up and working tomorrow, and maybe even a three aspect signal on the new platform. Pics will follow, obvs.
