Interesting rail Junction on my layout with isolation between the outer track, (mainline), inner track, (branch line) and the inner station tracks. #ModelRailway

<sucks pipe> The intermittent clicks are 3X and 56 operating uncommanded and only in one direction, so there is probably an intermittent short in their command wires. #ModelRailway

The debug list is shorter, but there's one particularly vexing one, that the capacitor discharge unit appears to be inoperative, but to investigate more fully I'll have to unglue it from the layout. The linkage problems, I think, are just down to bad installation because it's quite fiddly.

No pictures for this update but the model railway construction continues to move forwards.

I’ve spilt two of my storage lanes in half to hold four shorter trains instead of two longer ones. I cheated and just cut the circuit breaks with my dremel and wired in the four extra block detection circuits and updated JMRI to match.

The final three baseboards have been installed and I’m working on the wiring loom - power and DCC to the boards and the accessory controller. All the point motor feedback wiring is in. All the signal wiring is run (but not connected) and I’ve just finished installing the electronics that connects the SIGM20 signal controller to a Dapol double main signal (transistor switch, driven by the SIGM20, switches a relay, which is connected to the control wires that normally connect to a two way switch, x2). Just need to make up some point motor feeds, install decoupler electronics…

Forgot to mention how occasionally there is a click noise that I don't yet know if it is a solenoid firing un-commanded, or a point blade spring clicking over much later than the solenoid had tried to move the blades. But I need some time just sitting listening quietly, and sucking on a pipe stem.and saying "hmmm" to myself, to narrow it down to one (or all twelve) points #ModelRailway

First paint job was horrid. I've stripped it down and done it again. This is with satin teak varnish and dry-brushing that involves putting varnish onto the brush, removing as much as possible on a paper towel and brushing what remains on.

It's very thin layers and takes a long time. This is with 20 layers, but I took a photo after each layer just for reference when I do the other side.

Meanwhile I'm 3d printing the bogies too.

My point controls debugging list currently reads

Switch up; points up
Switch down: points down
12 - 12L opposite sense
23 - 23L inop
3X - pass
4X - sense good, linkage not
45 - 45L incorrect sense.
56 - 56R incorrect sense

Six DPST switches each controlling pair of points in a double ended fiddle yard. Intent to have both points respond in the same way to switch movements (e.g. switch up: both points move to route onto the upper line).

I spent an hour on it and my brain is leaking out of my ears.

It's not yet not fun.

The class 812 has yet to be taken out of its box. Meanwhile the smaller Peckett has done a lot of running. #ModelRailway

Today we made our annual visit to the local railway exhibition. The highlight this year was the Irn Bru train. Many delighted kids watching it go round and round.

I finally got all the point control wiring done and tested. Either the heat or I disturbed some of the connections between the point motors and the points, but the sun came out again, so it's too hot to investigate any further now. At least one switch fires the two correct point motors. #ModelRailway

Slowly realising that when making tiny parts, that it's way, way easier to assemble and glue larger pieces and cut them down to size than the other way around.

Once cut up, the longer piece in the photo that was just glued together using the brass tube as a jig will form the main body for several Kato NW2 coupler shims, the prototype for which can be seen next to it.

The prototype was made by cutting up then gluing together all four pieces. Would not recommend tring to glue 2mm pieces of styrene together. 🤯

Foof. Tried to do some gentle railway modelling in the cabin. All blinds drawn all day. Glowing like a horse after 5 minutes. Maybe tomorrow morning then.

Good news, I successfully stripped and tinned one set of point motor wires and then attached them robustly to the control electronics. Two to go!

Instead I’m using the last of the morning cool to … cut, strip and tin the last 20 control wires. I will be glad when this job is done! #ModelRailway

Grr the point motor wires aren’t stripped back and tinned very far. Getting them into the point controller electronics is fiddly as anything. Stripping the wires back further makes it worse. Not helped by a dodgy screwdriver. Trip to Screwfix beckons. #ModelRailway

Why she ended up with a Chinese whistle, I don't know. Some S160s did end up in China, but not this one. She was shipped straight to France, ended up working for SNCF before moving to the Hungarian state railways before eventually being accidentally sent for scrap, rescued and brought over here.

When I'm working on her, there are parts I find still stamped with her Hungarian number on (411.144) #ModelRailway

That whistle too is brilliant. Apparently (and I learnt this from the model’s manual), it’s a Chinese 5 chime whistle. #ModelRailway

Bloody amazing. He’s even got her loose rods clanking, which is one thing I felt was missing from the official sound! #ModelRailway
