  1. Earlier this year I pitched the wonderful Jack Lyttle a short story for his twitch stream's Story Time segment since he's in-between reading two classics at the moment.

It's a sort of steampunk sci-fi found-correspondence thing, and Jack ended up turning it into a bit of a radio play performance!

The VOD has just gone up on Youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=XZTNRvJcKt0

"The policy also bars funding for studies in the nascent field of “mirror life”—engineered microorganisms with reversed molecular building blocks that could theoretically threaten all life on Earth. No governments have so far enacted bans on such research and the issue has divided scientists, with some calling such prohibitions premature."

New U.S. rules on risky #pathogen research draw mixed reviews:

  5. For anyone nervious or with health anxiety: youtube.com/watch?v=XMSv3zTFF1Y. It's Rebecca Watson's video, "No, Hantavirus is Not the Next Pandemic".

Advocate & vote for better conditions for working, parenting & disability.

Join or start a union at your work. You need no-fault sick leave, esp when local infections break out.

    Do managers want:

Only ONE person this week out sick?
Or else a half-dozen in coming weeks?

  7. Also wear masks or respirators. (Except the snood type ones. The rest are all better than nothing or *way* better than nothing.) Don't travel or commute to work when ill.

Check what air filtration systems are installed where people gather, mainly indoor spaces. Consider public transport, at work, schools, public buildings, and manufacturing. Ask some organisations what their air quality data and upgrade plans are.

  9. Can we predict which #pathogen will be responsible for the next #pandemic? Mete Yuksel & Nicole Mideo explore a new study in @PLOSBiology that challenges the idea that pathogens that frequently spill over are more likely to emerge. Paper: plos.io/4ss5WCY Primer: plos.io/4uOyh8f

  16. 😔 There is a new salamander pathogen out there in the US, found first in non-native species in collections, including European Fire Salamander among a few others. Some of our native species are at risk, in particular Spotted Salamander and Eastern Newt.
"Scientists continue to work to identify the unknown pathogen first reported in a private collection of the genus Salamandra in November 2025 which may have originated from outside North America... Salamandra species that have gotten sick from this unknown pathogen, the death rates have ranged from 35-55%."

That's the bad news. The good news is that for everything wrong in this world, how do we know about this? Because people care, reported it, and those who know how are following it up and studying it. There is still good in the world. If you are a pet amphibian owner or flip lots of rocks looking for herps, check out the source link for more info and practice biosecurity.
