  4. After 60+ years, the common diabetes drug metformin has been found to unexpectedly affect the brain.
A new study shows it targets the protein Rap1 in the ventromedial hypothalamus, activating SF1 neurons to help lower blood glucose — and it works at much lower concentrations in the brain than in the body.
Promising findings that could lead to better treatments for glucose control and possibly brain protection.

  8. Is anyone out there who has struggled with high triglycerides willing to talk to me and possibly give some advice on lowering them?
I see a dietician, and he's been incredibly helpful with my eating disorder, and I exercise more now than I had the past 4 years, though admittedly still not enough.
I just don't know what else to do... I feel like nothing I'm doing is helping.

  20. `What they found was quite interesting. People with higher levels of a blood sugar marker known as HbA1c had reduced gray matter volume and were at higher risk of suffering from #depression. This association was even stronger in people with #prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to be called #diabetes. It was also stronger in people who were 60 years of age or older.`

  21. I have a bit of a "sweet tooth" so I was a tiny bit concerned when I had my A1C tested about 6 months ago and it came up 5.7, 0.1 above the normal range and some PA wanted to diagnose me as pre-diabetic based on this solitary data point.

So I decided to just watch how much sugar and starch I ate for a while and retest, and that came back today with 5.2, solidly in the green. I also lost a few pounds.

I am not a doctor, but my opinion is that making a diagnosis based on a single data point is probably not the best way to do it.

Also I'm going to continue to moderate my sugar intake. I think I feel better in general this way.

  22. My doctor's office sent a link to a #CDC risk test for #prediabetes. It included the attached screenshot. #Nonbinary erasure as usual.

I'm #agender #transmasculine; I was assigned female and have been on testosterone for 9 years. I picked "man" for the purposes of this test, but that label really isn't accurate for me.

This isn't just #identity politics; this stuff matters.

(FWIW my own doctor's office is very trans-aware; my complaint here is with the CDC.)

  26. Listening to an NPR #1A show on #Ozempic #semaglutide and feel like posting that I tried it for a few months over the winter. **It worked!** It suppressed my appetite *and* reduced the glycemic impact of food I did eat; I lost 10 pounds easily and felt my "#MetabolicDisorder" (aka #PreDiabetes) was under control. Unfortunately even after an initial nausea ebbed, I was still feeling faint and/or nausea off and on, and I decided to put it on hold for now until I can establish a snacking schedule.
