This is a photograph, probably taken in 1905, is of the newly constructed Otautau St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. Prior to its construction the Catholic parishioners of Otautau would have had to travel to Riverton to hear Mass. This is a 31st Reinforcements cap badge from the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). The scroll on the badge reads in Māori 'Whakatangata' and below 'Kia Kaha'. The first roughly translates to 'acquit yourselves like men', the second meaning 'be strong'.
