Interesting read & a good, fair report on the research findings on the triggers for the algal bloom, after-effects of which are still being felt today (continued absence of birds in my area, fewer giant cuttle fish at the head of the gulf, etc). Critics of the report (slow release, not enough shared data) also cited & given space.

I like this quote from Prof Mike Steer - doesn’t dumb it down & tries to educate: “"One of the challenges in science is that in answering one particular question you generate ten more," he said.

“"There is an incredible complexity of issues that are happened within a marine environment and the complexity within the harmful algal bloom community dynamics is just next level."”

Gorgeous arty photographic capture of the Prof, a mirror shot by Che Chorley, (hope the Prof got a copy for himself) shows we’ve a new photographer to watch, in my opinion. Also, excellent placement, tastefully preceding the mandatory algal-bloom-related shot of a dead fish on the beach.

Congrats to the journalist/s, editor/s, etc who put this together. 👏 Madina Jaffari the only journo credited that I could find. Solid work. 👍Respect. 👍

"A report has been released by the SA government with details on what caused the harmful #algalBloom.

The report concludes there were three major contributing factors that triggered the ideal conditions for the bloom to develop, including floodwater, a coastal upwelling and a marine heatwave."

"The South Australian government took months to update its health advice after the discovery of a potentially harmful toxin in the state’s disastrous algal bloom, insisting it posed minimal risk to humans."

  5. "Scientists have warned of a potential “regime shift” in the oceans, as the rapid growth of huge mats of seaweed appears to be driven by global heating and excessive enrichment of waters from farming runoff and other pollutants."

  6. I feel I ought to qualify and update this. On another 1 hour walk early this morning at Moana #SouthAustralia both of us got that tight chest and cough again 😩 It passes after a couple of hours but it's obviously not over.
I pity those living right near the beach

  8. #GoodNews that the Little Penguin population around Granite Island is holding (though still with really low numbers (18) of nesting pairs). This is in spite of the forever ongoing Algal Bloom / Infestation.

Given the infamous smell, THATS commitment.

It doesn't deal with solutions but it gives everybody a good basic understanding of what's happening with the #algalbloom in our ocean

  16. @anne_twain FFS! Nuclear plant discharges of heated water can also increase #HABs! Very bad!

" 'It is possible that activities associated with the working [desalination] plant, such as brine discharge and entrainment in the intake structure, will change the ecology of the plankton in the region and may promote blooms of harmful/toxic algal species which have been identified as components of the plankton community off Port Stanvac. Further monitoring is required before the impact of the Adelaide desalination plant on the plankton community off Port Stanvac can be adequately assessed.' "
