  2. There you go people… this is what #NeoLiberal economics is all about:
“The report also confirmed previous reports that GFG Alliance had moved about $200 million out of Liberty Bell Bay via inter-company loans.”

"Cash outflows to related parties … have meant that the Company has had very limited cash resources to withstand supply chain difficulties and commodity price fluctuations which have impacted profitability," the report stated.”

You can bet #Gupta and his Corporate mates didn’t lose any money out of this insolvency…

#SanjeevGupta and GFC have a record of milking companies dry before pulling out.

  4. Despite barely any population growth, Tasmania doesn't have enough houses
    abc.net.au/news/2026-07-19/tas

People need to be stopped from hoarding houses if we're going to increase housing affordability for low-income renters and middle-income people who want to buy a home.
    Nobody is saying it.
The article devotes just one sentence to hinting at the problem: "However, that does not take into consideration other factors, such as the number of homes sitting vacant."

Real estate agents are financially motivated by selling more houses to rich people who treat them as collectables that remain unused. Politicians are financially motivated by donations from property developers and wannabe property moguls. Of course these people are saying the solution to the problem is "Increase supply," and increase the offerings for this unhealthy spiral. The solution is to wean rich people off their hoarding-addiction for houses.

This is interesting for politics nerds – the borders of Tasmania's five parliamentary seats have been juggled around a lot, and the seat of Franklin has been surprisingly renamed as Tongerlongeter, after an Aboriginal resistance warrior:

  8. We sold our home and settled on April 10th. I just got a rates notice from the council. Contacted the Conveyancer and…. It currently takes ~4 months for the Land Titles Office to process changes of ownership.
This government can’t even manage a simple, time sensitive process but it will apparently be able to manage the development, budget, construction and operation of a >$1B stadium that we don’t need, has been stated by the Consultency firm the government appointed as not being financially viable.

Can't say I'm surprised, since Tas Labor provoked the last election then refused to work with the Greens to take power. Why would you vote for Labor in Tasmania, if it's not interested in being in government? #taspol

  12. Tasmanian politics really hitting the hard stuff. Premier Rockliff has been censured by Parliament, which amounts to basically nothing.

This is after two Ministers resigned after breaching the Ministerial integrity code.

We have a crooked Government and an ineffective opposition. The censure was brought about by the Greens!

It's only on the meta of MP for franklin Peter George, so instead of linking, here's what I'd do with such a tea towel.
Vintage tea towel printed with the same vinyl that is used for fossil fuel promoting rugby sweaters.

  24. @stephengentle The good news is that the Federal and Tasmanian State Governments have given the workers a stay of execution.

They're covering three weeks' pay: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-23/analysis-liberty-bell-bay-wages-rescue-package/106586958

It's better than being sacked, stood down, or placed on indefinite leave as of tomorrow (Friday).

But they'll be back in the same position in three weeks unless a buyer comes forward.

    Now.

If you support the idea of Australia having a viable manufacturing sector, then keeping the country's only manganese smelter open could be seen as nationally important.

In which case, it should probably be nationalised.

    But that's another story.

  28. The workers at Australia's only manganese smelter, Liberty Bell Bay in Tasmania, could be laid off as soon as *this Friday* unless a buyer steps up.

They've been told to take leave without pay or lose their jobs.

The federal and state government need to take action:

  33. First the government opened the borders; let it rip, told us to live with it, and now they're taking free RATs away from those who can least afford it. The affordable RAT option from pharmacies that they mention - $7.99 for a single.

It's lot to pay when you are already stretching your budget to afford fuel to get to your job and food for basic survival.

Not to mention going into a pharmacy where there's a nice old dear topping up her angina medication where she'll probably get infected. Though I guess most people do that anyway 🫩

  35. Make #Gas Giants Pay

Gas #corporations are making billions from #Australian gas – while the rest of us pay higher energy bills.

They extract publicly owned gas, sell it overseas at record profits, and pay next to nothing back in #tax. In #Queensland alone, gas companies made $36 billion in a single year and paid ZERO tax.
