  1. Today we celebrate #NativeAmericanHeritageDay alongside our partners at @[email protected] and @[email protected]!

Repost to win one of these custom-designed gloves featuring symbols important to the culture and history of the Dakota Oyate.

  2. This year, I am grateful for the #Indigenous people and other users on here who have taken the time and energy to educate ignorant folks like me of the realities of things like #Thanksgiving. It makes me feel even better about not treating the day as though it was special and just another day to work overtime.

Tomorrow is #NativeAmericanHeritageDay although I think that's not enough remedy compared to the day before being a colonizer genocide holiday.

I vote for ending Thanksgiving altogether.

  3. On #NativeAmericanHeritageDay, I’m thinking about how grateful I am to have met Lakota artist Danielle SeeWalker this year. She’s been an advocate for Indigenous food ways, including buffalo.

  5. National Native American Heritage Day on the day after Thanksgiving honors American Indians across the nation. The day celebrates the vibrant cultures, traditions, and heritages while recognizing Native Americans' many contributions. The day encourages listening to Native American voices and fostering pride in the vibrant and layered heritage embedded deep within our society. #NativeAmericanHeritageDay

  6. #HappyThanksgiving everyone in #BellinghamWA and in particular on our #SubduedSocial Mastodon instance. In recognition that we live on the ancestral lands of our neighbors the #Lummi, #Nooksack, and other #CoastSalish peoples, I made another voluntary #LandTax donation to the Lhaq'temish Foundation equivalent to 10% of our hosting costs and domain registration fees over the past 6 months.

  8. Plans for the Dakota Access Pipeline continue. A draft Army Corps of Engineers EIS last month pages the way for the pipeline -- and ignores the impact of water and lands disruption for Standing Rock.

One way to honor #NativeAmericanHeritageDay / #NationalDayOfMourning is to enter public comments opposing the pipeline. It's important. And it's free.

You can support Standing Rock here:

By the way, life expectancy at Standing Rock is as low as 45 years for men and 47 for women.

If you don't know the story of what the government did to Native children and their families, you're overdue to learn. While you're at it, consider donating to help with the postproduction costs of "Carlisle 200", a short film by Brave Space Media and Native Women Ride. Please boost! bravespaceproject.org/carlisle

  13. I wish you a happy #NativeAmericanHeritageDay in celebration of #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth. There are currently 574 different federally recognized tribes living within the US, and only half of which are associated with "Indian reservations".

  18. Dawnland -- a must-see documentary. It's not available online -- find (or schedule) a showing through Dawnland.org. DVD copies are available at many libraries!

"In an untold story of indigenous child removal, the stakes of family separation policy are no less than cultural survival.

    "About the Documentary:

"They were forced to assimilate into white society: children ripped away from their families, depriving them of their culture and erasing their identities. Can reconciliation help heal the scars from childhoods lost? Dawnland is the untold story of Indigenous child removal in the US through the nation’s first-ever government-endorsed truth and reconciliation commission, which investigated the devastating impact of Maine’s child welfare practices on the Wabanaki people.

"The Wabanaki are the people who are there to greet the light, 'the people of the dawn,' in the upper Northeast. For decades, Maine’s child welfare system placed Wabanaki children in foster or adoptive homes under the presumption that assimilating into white society would improve their quality of life and give them a better future. Many children in the system suffered untold physical and psychological abuse. Their story brings to light how getting to the heart of the truth can offer a flicker of hope."

  19. For #NativeAmericanHeritageDay, a profile of an inspiring #Indigenous woman

Wilma Mankiller was the first woman to be elected Principal Chief of the #Cherokee Nation. She initially faced down sexist opposition, but in 1985, she received almost 83% of the vote when she ran for re-election

  21. Today (Friday) is Native American Heritage Day. With that I give to you this really interesting read on Thanksgiving from the perspective of a Native American. Honoring indigenous Americans is what’s most important, and remembering the atrocities against them (even those still happening) rather than allowing them to disappear into unspoken history. (Hat tip: @Robotbeat)

  23. To all the #americans here who celebrate #thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving! I wish you the best day with your family.

To any #nativeamericans here on #mastodon, I want to wish you all a great #NativeAmericanHeritageDay. As a person of European descent, I will be celebrating the day by teaching my #children the #sacrifices native americans made and how this great nation would not have existed if it wasn't for the kindness shown to the settlers. Nothing will ever blot out the stain of how you were treated and the best I can do is make sure the sacrifice and the true importance is never forgotten in my family. :)

Cool, now make the edit where the Hittite pushes out the Hattian, the Greek conquers and assimilates the Hittites and then the Turks come and conquers the Greek
