  1. Shout out to #Resonite for going above and beyond with the native #Linux support: really cool to be in completely tech-unrelated sessions and noticed that more than half the users are on Linux. I was even at a meetup a couple weeks ago where there were like a dozen people and everyone was on Linux.

Shout out to #Envision, #WiVRn, #Monado, and #ALVR too: I see a lot of Linux users using Resonite's #VR support, which is also more developed than most actual VR-focused applications, which wouldn't be possible without those. Seriously, if you have a headset, and you've never tried Resonite in VR mode, you've gotta see it.

  2. What’s next for OpenXR?

On the latest Spatial Realities Podcast, our very own Frédéric Plourde joins the conversation to discuss how OpenXR has evolved, where the standard is heading, and how Monado is helping provide an open source foundation for XR runtimes across the industry.

  3. #HotTake: the #AppleVision / #AppleVisionPro is failing because the market for high-end #VR Headsets is already oversaturated, and virtually all other players have an established library of #apps and uses, and proven compatibility with either #SteamLink / #WiVRn or #Monado and whatever Windows uses for #PCVR. Even with the #iOS compatibility, you just don't have a reason to buy a $1000+ headset just to hold a virtual #iPad / #iPhone when you likely already own a real one, and unlike cheaper headsets it just doesn't offer many experiences that the average user is going to pay that for.

A new headset line would take way more than #Apple seems willing to invest, especially this late in #VirtualReality #technology's cycle.

That said, there's definitely still a market for something cheap and easy, like a "Quest Lite", something that is made to hook to a lower-end #gaming computer's GPU and run stuff like tracking and reprojection locally, but doesn't necessarily have the power for anything substantial.

  9. 115th #linuxvrc meet-up!
This time, it was in Brassveil Express by Yonemaruǃ vrch.at/hbhns370
The place was a co-working VR environment, even if I think the concept of it in VRChat is a bit flawed (like, you work with a full VR headset? Not even a passthrough one? Or you have your game in the background?) It was pretty sweet! It also had some very dangerous books to prop-surf with and a bar.

  11. Kinda trying to decide if I should just break down and boot into Windows for VR again. :corgi_roll: SteamVR still looks like jelly in Linux, and Monado is currently broken due to a Mesa bug even though it was supposedly patched.

Buh. VR really is the last thing keeping my stupid Windows partition around. :meowpout: It really bums me how Valve has left VR in such a broken state for so long on Linux. The Steam Frame gives me a little bit of hope, although I wish their VR efforts were going into an open source project instead of their proprietary SteamVR.

Only a small patch to monado needed because libusb does not initialize when the kernel does not have usbfs enabled.

  18. CW: More Linux VR Shenanigans

Today was suuuper promising with Linux VR  I got Monado working thanks to some Fedi help advising me to downgrade from SteamVR Beta to the standard release and I got a BSManager working so my Beat Saber mods work again.

Envision has been seriously great. I never thought I'd be managing my Steam Index peripherals through a LibAdwaita app :blobfoxthinkgoogly:

That said, I still ran into some mild issues. I tried using the Envision plugins that include WayVR Dashboard so I could launch my games from within the headset, but I couldn't get the dashboard itself to work. :meowpout: Not sure why. I can tell the dashboard window pops up because the controllers behave as if it's there, but it's totally invisible.

Other than that, some of the screenspace reflections are kinda weird, but that's pretty mild. :meowshrug:

Been really fun playing around with it. :pupper_wag: Hopefully I can get the dashboard working and I'll truly have a fully open source SteamVR.

  19. CW: Steam VR for Linux

Yes I'm CW'ing this because of the horrors inside. :soft_sweating:

I decided to pull out my Valve Index tonight and mess around with it. After spending several hours getting Windows to update (seriously Windows Update wtf), I decided I'd check out how Steam VR is coming along for Linux.

    The good news:

    • Base station power management finally works, so they'll sleep when you turn Steam VR off.
    • The VR overlay works flawlessly.
    • Proton games seem a lot more stable in VR.

    The bad news:

    • Still no motion smoothing.
    • Asynchronous reprojection is still broken.

So, like, yeah. The Steam VR experience on Linux has all the quality of life of Windows, except for the puke factor :corgi_wtf1: Which to me is, y'know, the most important thing.

Motion smoothing is self-explanatory, it just smooths out motion so it's not so jittery. Asynchronous reprojection is a little more complicated. It's essentially a method of re-using frames your GPU has already made paired with the motion data from your headset to paper over your GPU lagging behind the motion tracking while making new frames. Unfortunately, this has been broken on Steam VR for Linux for years. If the game you're playing isn't keeping up with the framerate of your headset, it generates a bunch of ghost frames that make your entire headset look like you just dragged a window around on Windows XP while it was freezing up. It also looks super jittery as it tries to catch up.

This isn't a huge problem in games like Beat Saber or Synth Riders, but it makes playing VR Chat (and, frankly, Steam VR Home because it's optimized like shit) really nauseating.

So yeah, Steam VR is kind of a nonstarter for some games. So I decided to try Monado, which is an open source OpenXR platform for Linux. I've tried working with Monado before but, back in the day, it was pretty confusing to set up and hard to troubleshoot. Nowadays there's a GTK-based setup utility called Envision. It's really really nice.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me. :corgi_wtf1: For some reason Monado would crash out with an exit code of 11 and I couldn't find a way to make it spit out any useful logs as to why. Launching the Monado service manually worked fine, but trying to connect to it kept erroring out. I could maybe get it working if I gave up on Envision and set it up manually, but it's really not worth the effort. Maybe I'll do more research later, but right now I'm just very let down. :redpanda_sweat:

So yeah, VR on Linux is still in a very frustrating state. It doesn't seem like Valve has abandoned Steam VR as there are a lot of improvements, but the most crucial things remain unimplemented or broken. While I'm hopeful Valve's upcoming Deckard headset might mean they give Steam VR some love, I'm a bit worried that it'll be like the Steam Deck where everything that isn't Steam OS is treated as a second-class citizen. I have a feeling Valve will hack together Gamescope to work well with Deckard but leave a lot of things broken on XWayland (since Steam still doesn't support Wayland on any compositor other than Gamescope). I love Valve and SteamOS is great, but I'm increasingly worried about how fragmented the Steam experience on Linux is becoming. :drgn_sigh:

The October deadline for Windows 10 is looming large and VR is the last thing keeping my Windows partition around. :blobfoxmeltsob: C'mon Valve, please fix Steam VR for Linux.

(Side note: I have a Radeon 6900XT so it's not an Nvidia thing. :blobfoxmlem: )

  20. It is with great disappointment that I report: #VR on #Linux just isn't ready yet. It would be, if #Valve would fix #SteamVR up to the same standard as the #Windows build, but in it's current state it's very restricted.

#Envision, #Monado, #OpenComposite, all these things are great, and they get you 98% of the experience. It works better than SteamVR for crying out loud.

But it's that 2% of issues that will make you go back to Windows. I hate to admit it, but it's the truth.
