  1. EvertyDesk: я отдаю то, на что ушли годы

Меня зовут Артур Валиев. Я открыл исходники EvertyDesk Lite — и заодно EvertyDesk Next, то, что должно было стать следующей версией. Полностью. Без купюр.

  2. I'm slowly getting nerd-sniped into writing a native matrix client in rust/iced or rust/gtk

I'm not sure if I'm up for the challenge...

The idea is to separate the app into two parts, a daemon that actually handles the core matrix business, and the UI client that communicates via IPC

The daemon can persist in the background and service notifs etc, while the UI client would be as stateless as possible. IPC can be done via anything, but I'm thinking JSON over a unix socket (are there better methods for IPC?)

Another thing I'm thinking of for the UI client is to be absolutely keyboard driven (vim keybinds go brrr, command menu with `:` near the top go brr (yes VSCode got that right))

  4. Sometimes on sale for $3.34, a box of Twinkies etc. is only $3.00 this week at Big Apple Meat Market (grocery), 42nd/ 9th.
They were *3 for $10* but they always honor the discount for one
So ignore the *2 for $6* sign and pick your favorite ~

  6. This is good podcast, ICEd's creator is talking about its architecture. However, this interaction -> message existed in WIN32 apps too, some had massive switch cases of WM_USER etc. And I loved the simplicity it when it worked.

  16. I got EGUI working pretty easily with pure Rust Wayland libraries (smithay).

ICED is giving trouble, it has way more abstractions. It's aiming to be more complete toolkit.

ICED input, drawing and mouse cursor are working, however small weird things are incorrect. Like all drawn widgets look like they are grayed out (however they function!), there is no mouse hover states, yet the text input appears.

  20. @alavi I don't know any platform where GUI is light and easy. #Rust people have good experience with #iced - choice for Cosmic Desktop.

Last time I did any GUI it was #Qt and #wxWidgets - both in #C++, but it doesn't mean I recommend that path in 2025.

#Clojure is a JVM language, hence violates your requirement on RAM/resources. IMVHO S-expression languages aren't good for GUI programming.

Have you considered #Dart and #Flutter?

  23. @chakie @blyxyas #iced had been selected for #Cosmic Desktop by @soller and it develops at very fast pace. In result has chance to become first go to for UI in Rust.

Slint is great as well; they relived their royalty-free licensing recently for Android included, so as long as your're fine with clearly stating the app uses #Slint, you can do commercial software with it.

I'm sorry to say doesn't have enough people with review/merge rights, so my work making and good on Wayland is going nowhere.

What are other libraries I could contribute to instead?

  31. Another weekend, another couple of steps fixing the input method mess I (partly) started:

    gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland

    Keyboard support and moving popups.

    codeberg.org/dcz/stiwri/src/br

On the client support side, I'm kinda bummed that looks like it's starved for maintainers. I don't want to switch contributions to something else because it's stalled.
