  1. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Attending a zoom session with 4 panellists, one of whom is the moderator.
Unfortunately the moderator is stepping into the other hosts' spaces to tell their own story.

    Please don't do this.

If you are moderating a meeting/panel/webinar/chat, don't keep taking it back to you, even if it seems that your story is relevant. Let the other panellists speak about their areas of expertise.

That's ok, Nick. All is forgiven.
    #Meta's over-zealous #moderating simply drove me, and countless others, to #delete our #Facebook #accounts and #data.

All is forgiven, because once we kissed
#Facebook goodbye, we discovered that the grass really is greener outside your walls.

  7. Finally, someone pointed out to me another snag in encryption recently. Encryption doesn't just hide the post from malicious actors, it can also hide it from the server itself: #staff already has difficulty #moderating direct messages, as they require reporting to work, and this adds another layer. Anything that can't be decrypted by the server software would even bypass locally based automation: we couldn't even set up a bot to watch for people saying the N word in the DM system, which is the number one way it's abused.

I don't necessarily think staff should be reading people's private messages without permission, it's definitely not an ability I would want to see implemented, but I worry that encryption could preclude us from implementing more sophisticated #moderation tools. Without it, the best we could do is have some sort of javascript-based system in the viewer itself recommending the user report a post when it detects things.

Maybe we should, but it needs to be considered.

  9. So i spent a few hours guaranteeing 20 instances, and adding about 25 or 30 endorsements/censors/hesitations.

I love the idea and I think it has a LOT of potential.

Regardless I want to list it all here so the effected instances can be aware and if they wish respond/react. You can read my reason for endorsement of any of the below servers in the links provided.

I suppose this can also double as my #FollowFriday #FF !

Also please consider if you are an admin signing up and endorsing these and other instances as well.

  11. So I found this cool new tool that looks like a very new take on the idea of a blocklist, not really sure I can even call it a block list.

    gui.fediseer.com/instances/det

As I understand it it does a few things:

    1) Only system administrators can get accounts, but users can view the data

    2) a chain of trust which in and of itself only proves you arent a spammer. Anyone in the chain of trust can add other instances. Once an instance is in the chain then their admin can get an account and contribute

    3) an instance in the chain of trust can add up to 20 other instances to the chain of trust. Should the instance loose their trust from their parent then the entire chain breaks including instances it trusted.

    4) You can add endorsements.. this is stronger than adding someone to the chain of trust. It is a way of you saying "this is a good server" and explaining what features make them a server you endorce

    5) You can censure instances too, these are instances you block and give reasons why.

    6) there are also lesser categories like hesitations where you can list concerns but not suggesting blocking.

    7) All this can be automatically populated from your instances black/white list if you wish. Or you can add entries manually

    8) you get a little badge you can put on your servers about me that shows the number of endorsements you have live.

I do highly encourage everyone to check it out.

  16. CW: meta fediverse/mastodon drama

    Let me get this straight:

FIRST: A mastodon instance (mastodon.art) defederated from another mastodon instance (universeodon.com) because of the following reasons:

    - Implementing full text search, which they felt made their users unsafe, and didn't provide enough warnings
    - Caring more about growth than carefully curated moderation
    - Meeting Meta behind the scenes (you can see in the linked response that people in the Fediverse was
not happy with the server owner)
    - Being concerned about removing the ability to report users

They also made a blog post publicly stating this:
https://dotart.blog/dotart-blog/defederating-from-universeodon so it's not like I'm pulling this out of my arse.

SECOND: msdn.social, a big instance, decide to defederate because they didn't like the idea of someone defederating from an instance
just because they spoke to Meta.

THIRD: The instance admin from msdn.social has said that they would not block first, but check out this new instance and then act if they misbehave.

FOURTH: lots of poop being flung.

    ---

This was such a badly mishandled set of events. Here are my thoughts:

    * Universeodon can do what they want. It's their instance. If they want growth at the sake of everything else, go for it. I'm just less likely to want to go there.
    * Mastoodn.art can do what they want. It's their instance. It's clear that they prioritise careful curation, and it seems they are very sensitive to that. They also host a lot of LGBT content too, so that's maybe where the sensitivities lie. Also, they are anti-capitalists. If people don't like that, they can move (although they seem to be doign v. well)
    * Msdn.social can do whatever they like. HOWEVER - their response feels incredibly knee-jerky and seems at complete odds to what they say. Defederating from an instance for the crime of... defederating against another instance and then saying defederation is not the way unless the instance is misbehaving (Defedding isn't something I would consider misbehaving - it may not be in the spirit, but it's within their power).

It would've been better if the admin of mstn.social just publicly critiicised mastodon.art instead for their administative techniques instead of doing the thing they seemed to be so against, and in favour of a corporation (especially with the Fediverse - community full of and mostly ran by average people who are sick of corporations)

  18. I am conflicted by @mozilla content policies announcement. I appreciate that a lot of thought went into it, but I think they could be used to eliminate a lot of necessary social tension.

An example is their violent content policy: “Users may not share content that depicts abuse of humans or animals, or that includes excessively gory or violent imagery that…can disturb other users.

I am a lifelong #vegetarian and I’ve been #vegan for 20 years. Photos of meat/dead animals disturb me. Am I to assume then that sharing this content will be banned in that instance? And if not, why not?

Also, nothing on who will be #moderating content. Is it volunteers, #Mozilla staff, external contractors??

  20. But knowing human nature, I'm not so sure how #sustainable this is in the long run. #Operating and #moderating the instances is time consuming, especially now with thousands of accounts being created daily.

On the other hand, I've read about the exodus of ad sellers from the bird site, which typically spend millions on #advertising (I think I read that Apple spent about 40m or 50m a month on the bird site). I wish there was a way to leverage at least some of that money for Mastodon.

  21. @jcrabapple Have you seen -- or are you writing? -- a handy guide for folks who might be interested in #hosting and #moderating a small-scale #LocalInstance?
    :-)

My technical chops were above average around 1992, but since then the wheel has been turning faster than this old hamster.

Trying to get a couple of 20 or 30 years younger friends interested, but haven't seen a good short list of how-to sites on their level.

And whilst I'm still thinking of it. I don't know what organisation there is currently for moderators (admin), but it strikes me that it requires almost a parliament of moderators across participating instances that is cross product, a parliament with process and consistent application.
