I attended a work elective on micro-aggressions and the presenter played us this video. I think I've seen it before but it was a good and embarrassing reminder of the many tropes that exist and are still being perpetuated uncorrected generation to generation. #racism #sexism #microaggressions

‘Girl, You Just Gay’ – Daily #Microaggressions Faced By #Trans and #NonBinary #Africans
May 1, 2024
"The #LGBTQI+ community in #Africa has made significant strides in the face of prejudice, homophobia, and discrimination. Despite the challenges posed by punitive laws and conservative cultures, there are efforts to support and mobilise LGBTQI+ youth activists on the continent. However, the community continues to face setbacks, with instances of violence and marginalisation being reported in various African countries. For instance, in South Africa, a country with strong legal protections, violence against LGBT people remains a pressing issue, with at least 24 reported murders in bias-motivated attacks in 2021.
Despite these challenges, there are efforts to advance LGBTQI+ equality globally, including engaging the private sector to help advance LGBTQI+ livelihoods. The private sector's role in respecting the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons is being recognized, with initiatives such as robust business due diligence and human rights-based data collection being promoted to track progress toward LGBTQI+ economic empowerment.
In the midst of these efforts, it is important to acknowledge the specific challenges faced by Trans people and non-binary individuals within the LGBTQI+ community in Africa. While some have found supportive communities, they often experience Micro-aggressions and discrimination within these spaces. It is crucial to address these issues and work towards creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for all members of the LGBTQI+ community in Africa.
Misgendering, Deadnaming, Marginalising
Trans people and non-binary identifying individuals in the LGBTQI+ community face Micro-aggressions from both within and outside the community. Micro-aggressions against Trans people and non-binary individuals can take various forms, including #misgendering, #deadnaming, and invalidating their gender identity. These Microaggressions can be particularly harmful and contribute to feelings of marginalization, distress, and invalidation. Research has shown that gender minority youth experience more familial #Microaggressions, invalidation of #LGBTQ identity, and threatening behaviours (Arijis Q. et. Al. 2023).
"For instance, assuming that all individuals present as either male or female and failing to recognize non-binary or genderqueer identities can be a form of Micro-aggression. Additionally, making comments that link an Individual's LGBTQI+ identity with illness or pathology, or expressing surprise when someone's sexual orientation or gender identity is revealed, can also be harmful Micro-aggressions."

ME: So you think we got targeted because he’s a bigot?

This makes me incredibly sad. I was a client there in the 90s-early 00s when I was a young woman needing care. They were wonderful.
I have no reason to doubt Kemlin Nembard. Sadly, this happens in so many spaces that describe themselves as progressive.

I started this a while ago and found it among lots of fragments in the notes on my phone. People who stammer are subjected to a lot of micro aggressions to make us stop stammering. People may believe they're well intended, but it's extremely unhelpful and could be seen as discrimination veiled in condescension. Disabled people have a right to be seen and disabled voices have a right to be heard. Just stop. ✋

"Racism affects mental health through #microaggressions (everyday acts of subtle aggression); #harassment (e.g., slurs, physical attacks); & #systemicdiscrimination (e.g., in employment, healthcare, education). These relentless stressors can wear down even the strongest individuals."[Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay]

Today I learned about #microaggressions by being on the receiving end. I thought I understood them & I still only have a tiny taste. I’ll work harder to make sure I’m not the sender of these hateful things & I know I’ve done so in the past. Bit by bit, I can grow and work for a better society.

Some research into the experiences of #surgeons who face /deal with #microaggressions in the workplace has just been published. Of note this data was obtained via delivering an online internally validated survey via some of the ACS communities. The results will be of interest to anyone who has a research/organizational focus on #genderequity and/or workplace harassment in the #healthcare sector. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002937824005702?dgcid=coauthor

Some homophobes don’t wear their bias on their sleeves. In fact, many of them are totally oblivious to it. So much so, they have made the exact opposite assumption about themselves, while harboring the delusion that they truly love and accept everyone for who and what they are.

"I do not use “#microaggression” anymore. [...] A persistent daily low hum of #racist #abuse is not minor. I use the term “abuse” because aggression is not as exacting a term. Abuse accurately describes the action and its effects on people: distress, anger, worry, depression, anxiety, pain, fatigue, and suicide.
What other people call racial #microaggressions I call racist abuse. And I call the zero-tolerance policies preventing and punishing these abusers what they are: #antiracist. Only racists shy away from the R-word — #racism is steeped in denial."

Here is your periodic reminder that if you're responsible for scheduling things, you need to pay attention to the Jewish holidays.
This might help: https://jewish-holidays.kamens.us/
This reminder brought to you courtesy of the coworker who, despite the fact that there is only one fall Jewish holiday this year on a weekday, *YOM KIPPUR*, managed to schedule a meeting on that day that could have been scheduled differently, because he was "not aware."
Don't be that guy.

I'm tired of spelling my #name for orders, slowly & carefully & with plenty of enunciation, & having ppl mispronounce it or uncertainly whisper it so I gotta pay extra attention. I'm considering coming up with a white person name, just for these food-ordering, etc, moments. When I was young, I rebelled. "LET THEM STRUGGLE, MY NAME IS MY #IDENTITY!" But now I'm old, crotchety, & just wanna quickly go home with my bag of food like some concrete jungle #cryptid.
So... What should my #whitepeople name be (note, some of these are not originally western names but are easier for white ppl than my current name)?
P. S. I still gotta have some ✨flair✨ so I'm not quite sure I could say "Jane Smith" with a straight face.
