What kind of people is this trying to label or imply the entire demographic as something, triggering those people to respond defensively to the indirect, subtle gaslighting? And then avoiding accountability by acting innocent.

When you try to “educate” people on micro aggressions, unconscious biases and casual racism, one of the most common responses you get is, “Why do you perceive those things as being bad?”, suggesting that it’s a problem with the people receiving micro aggression rather than with those doing the micro aggressions.
Another common response is that micro aggression is a misnomer and that it’s not aggression.
Well it is. They just don’t get it coz they’ve never experienced it.

I can easily name someone who's been showing "micro aggression" towards and bias against me over many years, but I won't be able to convincingly give you a solid concrete example of what exactly they've done. Such is the nature of micro aggression and that is why it's called micro aggression.

Three thoughts on #WalzVanceDebate:
1. #JDVance sets off all of my alarm bells. Every instinct of my body screams "PREDATOR!" in response to that man. Smarmy. Oily. I do not believe a single word that came out of his mouth tonight.
2. Vance WOULD NOT say that #DonaldTrump lost the 2020 election. He WOULD NOT say that he, Vance, would accept the 2024 election results if the GOP loses.
3. Walz consistently called Vance "Mr. Senator."
Vance consistently called Walz "Tim." #Microaggression -
The way my brain just *casualllly* recollects things from 14 years ago like they were just yesterday I feel should be classified as some sort of neurological #microaggression. :/

Sexual and gender minority college students of color are a multiply marginalized population. New research examining the impacts of identity-related stressors on these young people’s mental health suggests that, when compared with LGBTQ-related stressors, racist microaggressions from white LGBTQ people can be even more strongly associated with psychological distress.

"I do not use “#microaggression” anymore. [...] A persistent daily low hum of #racist #abuse is not minor. I use the term “abuse” because aggression is not as exacting a term. Abuse accurately describes the action and its effects on people: distress, anger, worry, depression, anxiety, pain, fatigue, and suicide.
What other people call racial #microaggressions I call racist abuse. And I call the zero-tolerance policies preventing and punishing these abusers what they are: #antiracist. Only racists shy away from the R-word — #racism is steeped in denial."

‘Pop feminism’ is the subject of Lily Alexandre’s latest video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=bmnsK74khNw
Not only does she expose the movement for the feminism-lite, protect-the-status-quo flash in the pan that it was
She also draws attention to the futility of situating the means of political change in awareness-raising and small personal actions
This applies as much to systemic gender-based oppression as it does to oppression of other groups, and even to issues like climate change

Quick tip: Calling Jews a "religious minority" is a micro-aggression, even if you're trying to be supportive. Please don't do that.

The single biggest #microaggression I experience as a (highly privileged male-passing, white) #immigrant in #finland is the assumption, based purely on my name, that I don’t understand Finnish.
Especially written Finnish. I read novels in Finnish (huge fan of Leena Krohn), I read the (depressing) news every day. I think I can cope with your email.
If this pisses off little privileged me, imagine how alienated other people feel?

This post has nothing to do with the bloody app or the moderation, please stop hijacking the thread to avoid the important point. Black folks feel uncomfortable with the ecosystem and it is up to us, white people, to fix the situation. @blkgoddess is not the first to express this.

@georgetakei I don’t know how the definition drifted. Originally #microaggression was used in the same way that microeconomics is used; it meant interpersonal rather than structural and institutional. Just like microeconomics is economics that affects people on an individual level and macroeconomics is economics that has to do with large scale, country level, etc.

Here at the CIP conference room for the consensus meeting. One of the presenters kept saying “The indigenous peoples are cute.” I counted at least five times she used this sentence during her presentation. The critical part was that she mentioned indigenous ppls being cute is our nature. Sounded like we’re all dumb dumb to her. Microaggression experience is our daily life as a native Taiwanese, and this is just one tiny bit of them.

All this with the idea to make you feel that you're not a real You-Name-It, that you don't belong. I myself were from the 'white' ones in Sofia but always felt this was very wrong. Later, when I moved to exercise my cherished freedom of movement in the EU, I experienced the same treatment as my non-Sofia-born fellow citizens. The minute 'Europeans' heard I was from Bulgaria, the attitudes would immediately change. And I am white, currently even blonde.

Polite exclusion in the classroom:
New participant observation study at a Swedish high school finds “a clear discrepancy between the school staff ’s description and the students’ description of the same classroom environment. No staff members mention the segregation or social exclusion [of minority students].”

The recent news of Ngozi Fulani’s (CEO and Founder of Sistah Space) treatment at Buckingham Palace has opened up more conversation about simply asking “Where are you ‘really’ from?”.
Why does this question matter?
There is nothing wrong with asking about where you lived or where you grew up, these are normal questions for making connections with people. However, the follow-up question “Where are you ‘really’ from?”, or “You look/sound like you are from X or Y”, trying to satisfy their own assumptions leads to more uncomfortable conversations.
I grew up in the UK and lived in Europe, South East Asia, and Asia. From experience, this question follows you around wherever you go. When I provide a simple answer, “I grew up in the UK”, it never quite satisfies their curiosity according to their own biased judgement. From those who ask, I don’t stereotypically look like someone who should identify as that. They probe further and push me in a position to convince new acquaintances that that’s where I am REALLY from. After numerous microaggressive conversations of the same questions, it gets very exhaustive.
These intrusive questions are often excused as being curious and framed without malicious intent. It can be triggering as it undermines your identity, making you justify your identity, distorting your sense of belonging and making you feel alienated. These unwelcomed conversations have real undertones of racism, anti-minority and anti-immigration, these judgements about someone’s race, ethnicity and nationality can be harmful to the recipient.
The only way we can eliminate unconscious biases is to listen carefully when someone speaks and make meaningful connections. We need to stop profiling someone’s identity based on our own biased judgements. We are all different, no one should be measured and placed neatly in a box!

When I meet kids with unfamiliar names, I have them repeat it carefully, then pronounce it until I get it right. Then I always say something positive about it, like "That's so beautiful!" or "That's such a cool name!" The way kids light up when I say it is heartbreaking. I know they have gone through years of people saying their names wrong and perhaps asking if they have a nickname (or not even asking, just doing it). I do it for them, and I do it for Past Me.

When you're a #POC #migrant cooking laksa for a large community event and a white council health inspector on a power trip decides to take apart your recipe and question you about *every single* minute step of your process because he is 'concerned about the preparation'... 🙄
(Was asked to elaborate on how I intend to blanch beansprouts, among other ridiculous things 🤪)
So you send back a point by point response, quoting FSANZ, holding temps and sanitising procedures, while also letting him know that you are a professional chef and have all the required food safety supervisor certifications.
You might say this isn't about colour...
But oh trust me. It is.
