  1. CW: Traitors UK with spoilers

Everyone: ‘Ross, there’s just something about you that makes me not trust you. I can’t figure out what it is.’

Oh look. The group is doing a racism again.

  2. “My PhD was all about understanding what happens to blood flow in collapsible blood vessels like the giraffe jugular vein. In my postdoc I was investigating how to optimise ventilator settings for patients in ICU and then how to deliver inhaled therapies into the lungs. Since then, my focus has been in trying to understand how diseases like Asthma and other respiratory diseases originate and then progress. This involves incorporating biology and physics into mathematical and computational models, using approaches from different areas of applied maths. More recently I have started to look into the mechanisms that could lead to a rare lung disease called lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and Long Covid.” - Bindi Brook

  3. Your brain is lying to you. And it's been doing it for years.

☕ Just like a coffee filter shapes every brew, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 filters every decision--often without you realizing it.

Leaders who fail to recognize this risk missing out on top talent, fresh perspectives, and real innovation.

It's time to recalibrate. Let's talk about unconscious bias in leadership.

In the latest episode of the Show we talk about

    - what is unconscious bias
    - how does it influence every day decision for good or bad
    - what can we do to be more intentional and avoid some common traps

Check it out and Happy Friday!

  7. @jeffowski I can't believe most of the comments, saying 'it wasn't intentional'. Sofware names are very carefully chosen. Product managers haven't intentionally used a female name in a derogatory way, they (and we know for a fact THEY were men) had the #unconsciousbias that an assistant should be a woman, and that bias is born from, hum... what is that called again in the #Barbie movie.... ah yeah, #patriarchy. If you don't believe our current society is patriarchal, go back to Barbie.

  8. Daily reminder that introducing a person as 'she's a mom AND doing a great job' perpetuates gender bias. Excellence isn't contingent on parental status. Let's be mindful of how we frame women's accomplishments #GenderEquality #UnconsciousBias

  9. About a year ago I printed out a copy of this paper👇by @Aaberhe et al.
It’s figure 1 says it all.
So I put it on the table in the institute’s kitchen. The paper circulated around the offices and landed back in the kitchen with visible signs of being read. Printing out the next reading tip ...

  10. Once I heard how a male committee member, wanting to praise a male student's work, compared him with Alexander von Humboldt. This made me wonder, would anyone ever acknowledge my research achievements by comparing me with a male scientist of the past?

If I were to call Katharine Birbalsingh an imbecile, would I too be guilty of 'unconscious bias'?

  12. @sister_ratched it’s weird isn’t it?

We know, with absolute certainty, that asylum seekers are drowning at sea, instead of marshalling resources to save them we marshal lawyers to jail their rescuers.

But, when it is rich people we push aside the most probably outcome and waste extraordinary resources on an endeavour with no purpose.

  13. #ImplicitBias isn’t “unconscious”?

“…participants in all 17 studies were able to accurately predict the patterns of their IAT results (…b = .44) …across samples, settings [online vs. in-person lab studies], countries …, and languages…. [These] results strengthen the hypothesis that cognitions reflected on implicit evaluations are accessible to conscious awareness.”

  15. A very to the point piece by @IngridAnell on the effects of accumulated unconscious gender bias and the need to change the male-dominated approaches in academia.
