On Friday, Celeste Cunningham (St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia) showed us where organic material is buried on continental slopes. Not just black shales, but also in the levees and channel fills formed by turbidity currents, often adsorbed on clay particles. Lots of wonderful field shots and sample photos!

Last week Elliott Mueller (U. Colorado Boulder) gave us a fascinating and well-crafted talk about #fermentation, that I'm still working through.
He showed that the rate limiting step to oxidation of organics is likely breaking the large molecules, often by fermentation to acetate.
Acetate fermentation produced unique carbon and hydrogen isotopic signatures, quantified by his new methods (orbitrap mass spectrometry).

I was delighted to be able to visit the #ErnestRutherford Museum at #McGillUniversity when I was recently in #Montreal. I spotted this gem in a display case. The docent recalled the story of Harriett Brooks. It rang a bell, and when I got home I cracked open Dava Sobel’s “The Elements of Marie Curie”. Sure enough, Brooks has a whole chapter devoted to her.
The “new gas from radium” is now called “radon” and it’s critical to the research I and many others do in the search for #DarkMatter.

Congratulations to Dr. Jessica Salas Navarro who successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Advancing Volcanic Gas Monitoring to Unravel Eruption Processes: Insights from Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, Costa Rica" (supervisors John Stix (McGill Univ.) and Maarten de Moor (OVSICORI, Costa Rica).
They monitored summit plume gas compositions, remotely-sensed total SO2, and seismic/infrasound signals.
