Company Behind #CaliforniaChemicalLeak Was Building #F35 Parts Amid Rush of Orders From #US and #Israel
By Jonah Valdez, 5/28/2026
"The military contractor responsible for a Southern California chemical leak that forced as many as 50,000 people to evacuate their homes over the weekend manufactures parts of F-35 fighter jets likely bound for Israel, The Intercept has learned.
"The #GardenGroveCA, #GKNAerospace plant, whose 7,000-gallon chemical tank ruptured last week and threatened to explode, has brought in more than $13 million since 2017 in subcontracts with military manufacturing giant #LockheedMartin, according to an analysis of federal contract data conducted by the #PalestinianYouthMovement and independently verified by The Intercept. Further analysis of F-35 production for Israel conducted in 2025 by #Ploughshares, a Canadian independent research institute, found that Lockheed doles out subcontracts to hundreds of companies across more than a dozen countries to help build the jets. Among them is GKN Aerospace Transparency Inc., the GKN subsidiary based in Garden Grove, which raked in more than $255 million from subcontracts with Lockheed Martin.
" 'While #GKN chases contracts and profits, our community pays the price with school closures and disrupted livelihoods,' Sarah Awaida, an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement and Garden Grove resident who was evacuated due to the leak, said at a press conference in the city on Tuesday. “And our people abroad pay the price when the same weapon systems produced here are used to massacre people in #Gaza, in #Lebanon, in #Iran and all across the region.'
"Garden Grove is a predominantly #WorkingClass and #immigrant city in Orange County, just outside of Los Angeles. The evacuation order, which has since been lifted, disproportionately affected residents who are #LowerIncome."

‘Going green now for who?’ Yakama protest clean energy project on sacred site to power data center
Mounting evidence shows that a clean energy project along the Columbia River in Washington near a Yakama sacred site would in large part power a data center
by Alex Baumhardt, Oregon Capital Chronicle, May 28. 2026
GOLDENDALE, Wash. – "High up on the Washington side of the Columbia River near the John Day hydroelectric dam, members of the #YakamaNation gathered to protest a clean energy storage project slated to be built on a #SacredTribalSite.
'Supporters of the #Goldendale pumped-hydro energy storage project have said it will help meet growing regional energy demand, and the project developers tout its potential to one day power up to half a million homes without sending harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. But mounting evidence shows a large #Datacenter campus could be among the main beneficiaries of that power.
"At the event earlier this month, Yakama leaders and a handful of nonprofits fighting the project in federal court, including Hood-River based #ColumbiaRiverkeeper, called on Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson to intervene after state and federal agencies issued key permits to the project developers, a process 10 years in the making. This was despite a state review finding that it would have 'significant and unavoidable adverse impacts' on Yakama historic sites and culturally significant plants.
"The 700-acre hydrostorage project is slated to be built on the contaminated grounds of an abandoned aluminum smelter formerly owned by #LockheedMartin, and, more broadly, a site that has long encroached on a sacred Yakama site called #Pushpum, meaning the 'Mother of all roots.'
"It’s home to #Yakama #ArchaeologicalSites and dozens of seeds, roots, flowers and shrubs harvested and protected by the tribe, some of which are endemic only to the area.
" 'I know we’re in a time when we need renewable energy, but why on our #RootGrounds? Why on critical #MigratoryCorridors for #hawks, for #SageGrouse and the deers?' asked #ElaineHarvey, a watershed manager at the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission and a member of the #Yakama’s #KamíłpaBand.
" 'And I say: For who are we building? We’re going green now for data centers,' she said. 'We’re not going green for Washington and Oregon state mandates. We’re going green for data centers.' "
"The project’s owners, the Danish investment firm #CopenhagenInfrastructurePartners, have not disclosed details about who would buy the energy."

The only ones who truly benefit from the #WarMachine are #Corporations! And this is further proof! My uncle was in the US Army and when he was discharged, he could fix just about anything electro-mechanical! But nooooo... We can't have folks fixing stuff themselves -- just buy new ones and waste #taxpayer money!
Congress Quietly Kills Military “#RightToRepair,” Allowing #Corporations to Cash In on *Fixing* Broken Products
Both chambers included Pentagon budget provisions for a right to repair, but they died after defense industry meetings on Capitol Hill.
by Matt Sledge, December 9 2025
"The idea of a 'right to repair' — a requirement that companies facilitate consumers’ #repairs, #maintenance, and modification of products — is extremely popular, even winning broad, bipartisan support in Congress. That could not, however, save it from the #MilitaryIndustrial complex.
"#Lobbyists succeeded in killing part of the National Defense Authorization Act [#NDAA] that would have given service members the right to fix their equipment in the field without having to worry about military suppliers’ intellectual property.
"The decision to kill the popular proposal was made public Sunday after a closed-door conference of top congressional officials, including defense committee chairs, along with Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
"Those meetings were secret, but consumer advocates say they have a pretty good idea of what happened.
" 'It’s pretty clear that defense contractors opposed the right-to-repair provisions, and they pressed hard to have them stripped out of the final bill,' said Isaac Bowers, the federal legislative director at #USPIRG. 'All we can say is that #DefenseContractors have a lot of influence on Capitol Hill.'
"The idea had drawn bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, which each passed their own versions of the proposal.
"Under one version, co-sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mt., defense companies would have been required to supply the information needed for repairs — such as technical data, maintenance manuals, engineering drawings, and lists of replacement parts — as a condition of Pentagon contracts.
"The idea was that no service member would ever be left waiting on a contractor to fly in from Norway to repair a simple part — which once happened — or, in another real-life scenario, told by the manufacturer to buy a new CT scanner in a combat zone because one malfunctioned.
"Instead of worrying about voiding a warranty, military personnel in the field could use a 3D printer or elbow grease to fix a part.
" 'The military is a can-do operation,' Bowers said. 'Service members can and should be able to repair their own equipment, and this will save costs if they can do it upfront and on time and on their schedule.' "
