  1. Well, tomorrow I have a meeting with my boss to talk about prolonging my contract.

Right after I give a talk about how terrible the situation for #postdoc.s is (precarious work environment, high prevalence of mental health issues).

I can't decide whether the timing is great or terrible.

I made the talk with #Quarto, and uploaded it to #Github, so you can check it out at tsievert.com/au-section-08-202

First time I created slides in Quarto and first time I publish them

  3. 📚 Apparently, 155 pieces of research advice were not enough.

The second edition of How to Survive (and Thrive) in Research is out!

    👉 research-rants.com/

I’ve added 15 new pieces of advice, bringing the total to 170+ short, pragmatic, and brutally honest lessons about navigating a research career based on my 20+ years of experience (23 since my first paper, at the @null, called #uml at the time, to be precise).

The goal remains the same: to help junior researchers (new PhDs, new posdocs, new PIs,...) learn in a few hours some of the things that would otherwise take years (ok, allow me a bit of overselling for a second 🙏) of trial and error to discover.

From choosing your PhD topic to publishing, getting funding, dealing with reviewers, building collaborations, finding a job, managing a team and, occasionally, actually doing some research.

Among the new pieces of advice:

👉 A paper accepted is worth two in the pipeline
👉 The grass is always greener in the private sector
    👉 Avoid impostor syndrome
👉 Do not listen to my advice

And a small thank-you to those who already bought the first edition: if you already own the book, just write to me and I’ll send you the updated version for free. Don't buy it again for the new advices. And well, you wouldn't do it anyway 😉. I'd just ask you for an honest review on Amazon as this will help other researchers-in-need discover it.

  4. „Exzellenz entsteht nicht aus Stress. Sie entsteht aus Neugier und Engagement." Bastian Fromm schreibt in unserem Essayheft über das, was Forschende wirklich antreibt — und warum strukturelle Unsicherheit genau das untergräbt: 👉 laborjournal.de/rubric/essays/ #AcademicCareer #Wissenschaftspolitik

  5. "All four specialists recommend developing a network of colleagues through your institution, conferences and postdoctoral associations."

This is a commonly misunderstood point. The best kind of networking you can do when you are a PhD student is to get to know other PhD students from other groups in your general field. Because they will be an invaluable source of info about your perspective post-doc supervisors (and in 10 years some of them will be your colleagues and collaborators).

  6. Dialogue is key for PhD success! Ulkrike Lohmann, Vice President for Doctoral Studies, emphasizes the need for consistent annual status conversations with doctoral candidates to ensure clear communication and proactive support. #DoctoralCandidates #AcademicCareer ethz.ch/staffnet/en/news-and-e

  7. I have been approached by an editor of #JOSS (fediscience.org/@joss@fosstodo) who told me about #JOSE (jose.theoj.org/ - for which I could not find a Mastodon handle).

The idea is to provide a low-hurdle academic reward for open access educational material -- with a particular computational emphasis.

Thing is, that you hardly get an academic “paper” if you develop teaching material. So, this might be appealing for some folk here. 😉

  8. As I head into the final stretch of my PhD, there’ll be no avoiding the dreaded CV overhaul. I’ve admitted to myself that my current one is too wordy.

Younger students, who I help with PhD applications, share their academic CVs with me. I noticed that putting “narrative bio + goals” paragraphs at the top is becoming more common.

  10. #SciCommTip 9 [1/6]

You're a #Scientist and want to boost your #AcademicCareer? Use your #SocialMedia account to make your name a brand!

    How to get started:

1️⃣ Choose your social network. Because you're targeting your peers, that's #Mastodon (#Twitter?) or possibly #LinkedIn. (Don't have much experience using the latter, but some find it useful & you're less likely to be confronted with anonymous hatred.) Check who of your peers are on which network.

  11. A shocking response from a university professor. She got Erasmus+ Internship grant and applied to a lab at Stockholm University. He declined the student because Turkey doesn't support Sweden to join NATO. Weird!
