  1. The latest honor is that researchers at universities in Tōkyō have a national grant to study podcasting for educator professional development, and they are taking my Japancasting podcast as a case study. They interviewed me by Zoom and I could enjoy recalling my innovations from 2005 in Japan, soon after podcasting started in North America. Here I'm showing some scenes from the early period, and again in collaboration with Indian colleagues, partly to reach English learners in South and Central Asia and those interested in Japan.

See the Podcasts & Videos web page for most of the educational podcasts and publications about the process: japanned.hcommons.org/multimed

  2. "Foreigners and Japanese Adapting to Each Other": a presentation to university students and staff from Thailand and Japan at Kansai University. I was an Adjunct Professor there from 2015-2020, teaching ICT classes foreign exchange and regular students. I also pioneered a Global Faculty Development position there.

ABSTRACT: Most of my life has been devoted to bringing Japanese together with foreigners in their midst. This presentation applies perspectives from intercultural communication and bilingualism, courses I have taught, to give advice to both sides. A middle way of adapting as a professional foreigner is suggested, between the extremes of alienation and going native. A bilingual slide advises Japanese on research findings that ease their concerns about cultural identity in intercultural relations.

  3. New publication: "Interview with Steve McCarty" [on his professorial accomplishments in Japan].

The College and University Educators research group of the Japan Association for Language Teaching has honored me with their second annual Veteran Teacher Voices interview on my teaching career in Japan. I critique the foreign language teaching profession, discuss future trends of increasing foreigners in Japan, the need for English, and long-term effects of AI on language acquisition.

  8. Deleted my #X #Twitter account because of its evil owner, so call me ex-X as I cross it out of my nice life here in #Japan! Thanks to @dangillmor for the nudge. I'm a stickler anyway about living by #academic #ethics: japanned.hcommons.org/academic

I'm in the #Humanities Commons instance, and we have free profiles like hcommons.org/members/stevemcca that include a link to the old blue bird of Twitter, and members are increasingly leaving, so our admins at @hello might want to reconsider having that item in the next version of profiles.

What can I do with all this new free time besides taking contemplative hikes in Kyoto? I'm still looking for a wide range of informants and academic colleagues, as I should have big news on #international #collaboration in 2024. I'm looking for #friends in fields such as #online #education, #bilingualism, #language #teaching with #technology, #journalism, #interculturalcommunication, and #Asia.

A little positive reinforcement goes a long way!

  12. Presentation and cosplay! Colorful scenes with faculty and staff from Kindai University (近畿大学) in Osaka and Rangsit University near Bangkok, and students from several Asian countries. For the first time I presented on American culture and multiculturalism, drawing from my Intercultural Communication class. The slideshow is at researchgate.net/publication/3 or academia.edu/107508712
The Kindai faculty presenter on Japanese culture let us dress up in yukata, and I could even get a pair of geta wooden slippers for cosplay photos!

  13. The meeting of Eastern and Western civilizations over the past half century has shown both sides that there can be contrasting ways of thinking and functioning in the world that are also viable.

There have been sporadic East-West encounters for ages, such as through the Silk Road, but only in our time have the #civilizations had to come to grips with each other's #culture. There has been mutual influence, even while fundamental aspects of the contrasting #cultures have not yet been bridged.

"East-West Cultural Differences in Basic Life Stance" was a deep dive that is recently surging in interest again, at academia.edu/44784139

  17. CW: Life in Japan

#Introduction to my #university classes, lectures for the #Japanese government, and surprisingly successful Japanese family:

I teach #InterculturalCommunication and #Bilingualism classes (ask about them if you like) in #Osaka. When I was headhunted as a full professor on the #pilgrimage island of #Shikoku in 2004, I was surprisingly also recommended to lecture for the Japan International Cooperation Agency, introducing Japanese People and Society to visiting official delegations from developing countries.

Our house is near #Kyoto, and our sons in their early 30s work full-time in #Tokyo. My wife works for one of Japan's top department stores. One son is a sound director in the entertainment industry, & has blessed us with a 3/4 Japanese granddaughter. Our other son is in management already for one of Japan's most innovative global companies, in #digital transformation. He just got back from Seattle, NYC, & #Boston, my home town!

  18. #Academics, please take 2 minutes to answer this toot if you have time. And please boost!

We are planning to create a #digital #research network tool
and are curious about academic tools and services you currently use online:

    What do you use?

Why and for what purpose do you use them?

Are there any services missing online, do you think?

thank you very much for sharing.
