Happy Official Languages Day! 🇨🇦
2 official languages, 1 country, and roughly 67 ways to apologize in both.
Here’s to English and French not competing for the mic, but sharing it, in harmony, ideally with subtitles.

Rafi Saleh reviews two books related to translanguaging for the journal Applied Linguistics. In my view, his analysis displays a kind of disciplinarity whereby generalities about plurilingualism are vulnerable to criticism from various quarters, but by specifying the perspective, such as policy or ontology, differing stances can both be true.

CW: Individual, Family, and Societal Bilingualism
In reference to #translanguaging, five days ago I showed slides suggesting a paradigm shift in #LanguageEducation to a developmental #bilingual perspective. The presentation https://www.academia.edu/71334694/Bilingualism_for_the_Individual_Family_and_Society it came from certainly needs to be divided into more digestible parts. Here are slides charting issues at the individual, family, and societal level of #bilingualism.
Although I have been through all this in #Japan, see if it does not apply elsewhere with international families, #multilingualism and #multiculturalism. Let us know.

Regarding #translanguaging vs. code-switching between languages, Rafi Saleh in Bangladesh, who did his PhD in Australia on translanguaging, informed me: "According to code-switching theorists, a bilingual has two linguistic systems, whereas a monolingual has one. For translanguaging theorists, both bilingual and monolingual people have one linguistic system, but bilingual people's systems are more complex, and they learn to divide the system into two for external forces rather than linguistic reasons."
This accords with my view of always-on bilingual mode. The pictures show my proposed paradigm shift from a conventional #ForeignLanguageTeaching model to a #developmental #bilingual perspective.Join the 🦣 group @Bilingualism to see & share posts.

Efthymia Kapnoula @EffieKapnoula asked: what is the difference between translanguaging and language/code switching?
Wikipedia confirmed that code-switching is at the individual level, whereas #translanguaging has a broader meaning that includes pedagogy. I code-switch in teaching and mix Japanese with English. I call it '#bilingual mode' where both #languages are always on.
My 'Levels of Bilingualism' framework includes plural languages at the individual level (bilingual development, language acquisition), family level (bilingual child-raising, biculturalism), societal level (a country's language communities and policies), and school level (bilingual or international education, second or foreign language teaching).
