  1. AI-Translation: Opportunity or Danger for Multilingual Families?

If a translation app can help your child understand their grandma's words, does it actually matter that they used one? I think it does — and as both a language professional and a bilingual parent, here's why the difference between understanding language and truly feeling it is everything.

  8. Presentation "Foreigners and Japanese Adapting to Each Other" at Kansai University in Osaka on adapting to life in Japan, described more fully at permalink hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty/

The presentation recommended being a professional foreigner as a middle way between alienation and assimilation, or between remaining an outsider and going native.

Check out the slideshow, with actual untouched photos as backgrounds, at researchgate.net/publication/3

A bilingual slide has a message to Japanese people about adapting to the foreigners in their midst. Show it to any Japanese people you know who are hesitant about intercultural communication:

  9. "Foreigners and Japanese Adapting to Each Other": a presentation to university students and staff from Thailand and Japan at Kansai University. I was an Adjunct Professor there from 2015-2020, teaching ICT classes foreign exchange and regular students. I also pioneered a Global Faculty Development position there.

ABSTRACT: Most of my life has been devoted to bringing Japanese together with foreigners in their midst. This presentation applies perspectives from intercultural communication and bilingualism, courses I have taught, to give advice to both sides. A middle way of adapting as a professional foreigner is suggested, between the extremes of alienation and going native. A bilingual slide advises Japanese on research findings that ease their concerns about cultural identity in intercultural relations.

This series offers a taxonomy classifying phenomena of bilingualism according to the five levels, which have been useful for teaching university classes on bilingualism and bilingual education.
