Happy Official Languages Day! 🇨🇦
2 official languages, 1 country, and roughly 67 ways to apologize in both.
Here’s to English and French not competing for the mic, but sharing it, in harmony, ideally with subtitles.

"Foreigners and Japanese Adapting to Each Other": a presentation to university students and staff from Thailand and Japan at Kansai University. I was an Adjunct Professor there from 2015-2020, teaching ICT classes foreign exchange and regular students. I also pioneered a Global Faculty Development position there.
ABSTRACT: Most of my life has been devoted to bringing Japanese together with foreigners in their midst. This presentation applies perspectives from intercultural communication and bilingualism, courses I have taught, to give advice to both sides. A middle way of adapting as a professional foreigner is suggested, between the extremes of alienation and going native. A bilingual slide advises Japanese on research findings that ease their concerns about cultural identity in intercultural relations.

New publication: "Interview with Steve McCarty" [on his professorial accomplishments in Japan].
The College and University Educators research group of the Japan Association for Language Teaching has honored me with their second annual Veteran Teacher Voices interview on my teaching career in Japan. I critique the foreign language teaching profession, discuss future trends of increasing foreigners in Japan, the need for English, and long-term effects of AI on language acquisition.
I believe educationalists will find this article interesting: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/386424805

Deleted my #X #Twitter account because of its evil owner, so call me ex-X as I cross it out of my nice life here in #Japan! Thanks to @dangillmor for the nudge. I'm a stickler anyway about living by #academic #ethics: https://japanned.hcommons.org/academic_life
I'm in the #Humanities Commons instance, and we have free profiles like https://hcommons.org/members/stevemccartyinjapan that include a link to the old blue bird of Twitter, and members are increasingly leaving, so our admins at @hello might want to reconsider having that item in the next version of profiles.
What can I do with all this new free time besides taking contemplative hikes in Kyoto? I'm still looking for a wide range of informants and academic colleagues, as I should have big news on #international #collaboration in 2024. I'm looking for #friends in fields such as #online #education, #bilingualism, #language #teaching with #technology, #journalism, #interculturalcommunication, and #Asia.
A little positive reinforcement goes a long way!

CW: Life in Japan
#Introduction to my #university classes, lectures for the #Japanese government, and surprisingly successful Japanese family:
I teach #InterculturalCommunication and #Bilingualism classes (ask about them if you like) in #Osaka. When I was headhunted as a full professor on the #pilgrimage island of #Shikoku in 2004, I was surprisingly also recommended to lecture for the Japan International Cooperation Agency, introducing Japanese People and Society to visiting official delegations from developing countries.
Our house is near #Kyoto, and our sons in their early 30s work full-time in #Tokyo. My wife works for one of Japan's top department stores. One son is a sound director in the entertainment industry, & has blessed us with a 3/4 Japanese granddaughter. Our other son is in management already for one of Japan's most innovative global companies, in #digital transformation. He just got back from Seattle, NYC, & #Boston, my home town!
