Culture Clash
I had a revelation the other day during a discussion on phishing scams, of all things. Scammers tend to hack our psychology and use it against us. So they deploy authority. “This is officer so and so from the social security administration.” They got novelty going for them because you aren’t expecting their call and it catches you off guard. Then they introduce some fear and urgency. “We’re going to need you to resolve this matter right now so you don’t get into more trouble.”
All in good humor here, but there is a certain type of person with a psychology that is already so broken, you just can’t hack it with the usual techniques. Somebody done poured water all over their keyboard long ago! The whole circuitry is now fried. I jest a bit, but seriously if you try to deploy “authority, novelty, fear, and urgency” on a good chunk of neglected Gen X latch key kids, we’re likely to just laugh. Don’t threaten to steal my identity, I’ll just threaten not to take it back. Hey man, no take backs. You wanted it, now you can just keep it and all the bills that go with it!
By nature I am simply allergic to authority, novelty, urgency, and fear. I can experience all of those things, but they just give me hives. They are triggers. I’m prone to have knee jerk reaction and do the precise opposite of what you want. Just the words in a bit of advertisement, “Act Now,” are urgent enough to ensure I will never buy your product.
Sadly this is often not true of people just a wee bit older. I’ve been absolutely gobsmacked by how vulnerable they can be to anyone pretending to be an authority. For the record, Social Security, the IRS, Veterans Affairs, most of those government services will NEVER, EVER call you. Local law enforcement will NEVER, EVER call you asking for money. They simply do not have the manpower and the time to deal with people one on one like that.
I recently had a fruitless discussion with an older woman about how sometimes people lie. She was absolutely convinced that no one would ever falsely claim to be an authority from some agency. In fact, she was annoyed with me for suggesting such a thing and instantly wanted to defend the good name and character of this complete stranger she didn’t even know. Her primary concern was defending this scammer’s non existent reputation. He said he was from a reputable government agency, therefore he must be moral and upright!
Unlike me, apparently?
There are some big culture clashes in our society right now and it isn’t simply generational. Some of it is, but some of it has to do with personalities and experiences. We have the Silent Generation, the Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and on down the line, but what we really have is the hyper-resilient, rugged individualists, versus a more social justice oriented, collectivist class. It’s not just age or generations, it’s politics, personality, culture. For example the social justice oriented, collectivist class in my area are all a good 20 years older than me.
Very often however, it’s younger folks who feel the lure of peer pressure, the desire to fit in, the siren call of collective community.
These aren’t really value judgments or moral issues, either. There are some real drawbacks to being a resilient, rugged individualist in this context. I’m not implying one way is better than the other. I’m chuckling here, but I sometimes lurk around the far right, anti collectivist, pull-yourself-up-by-the- bootstraps crowd, just to remind myself why I have chosen to live far away from people and just never leave the house! (I’m kidding, I drag myself outside kicking and screaming at least once a day.) It’s just really expensive out there and there are all these people!
So my revelation was just about trying to extend more grace, to be more patient, to recognize that there are different mindsets going on that can really impact communication. Someone like me who is hyper-resilient and independent tends to get slammed from both sides, both from the young who are seemingly unaware that they have access to more resources than you ever did and the from the old who will promptly toss you aside in favor of some sketchy stranger from across the world, who they don’t even know!
