I am HOPELESS at AV stuff, but I help administer a little art/photo crit group.

We started out meeting on Zoom and that has an inbuilt tool to screen record. In our efforts to try and stick it to the corporate stiffs we migrated to Jitsi.

Since then I have never made a successful screen recording.

I have done one that was silent (I think with Quicktime), a second that was silent but using the inbuilt mac screen software. Another was entirely black (not from using Incognito mode) and the last was just a 2 hour recording of my face (this was Jitsi in the browser using the record function but it just used my camera).

Years ago I do recall using Soundflower to help change input/output for audio. I also have CleanShot. but I think my problem is the audio input/output.

TL; DR
How do I screen record via the browser on a Mac. And treat me like I am 6. I need it super simple. Is there a way to toggle the audio easily?

So far, my options are to run #CaptionNinja alongside Jitsi (free), or to embed a Jitsi-as-a-Service meeting iframe on a web page and enable captions (premium).

I have a minor gripe with modern video apps (#videoblogging, #videoconferencing, #videochat… basically every app where the user has a camera pointed at themselves, and the app renders a preview of the camera's perspective).

I've been using #webcams since the 640x480 days, and the early implementations were all set up very intuitively. The preview would always show a #MirrorImage of the camera's input, while the actual video, whether it was recorded, broadcast, or whatever, was left unmodified. This was great!

But sometime in the last decade or so, all the video apps started doing this annoying thing where they give the user an option to toggle the #mirroring effect, but that's exactly the problem – they treat it like any other effect! When you turn mirroring on, it's on for both your own preview AND for the actual video, and vice versa.

Why on earth did they do this? When I'm on a video call, I want my preview to be mirrored, but I want everyone else to see the unmodified video! 🤬
