TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is still required by many universities 🎓 for international students 👨🎓 .
Approximately 9 out of 10 US universities prefer TOEFL over other English language tests. It is accepted by nearly all US institutions, making it the "Gold Standard" for admissions.
Minimum Score Criteria
Ivy League Schools: TOEFL score of 100-115.
Top 50 Universities: 90-100.
Community Colleges: May accept scores as low as 60.

What's the weirdest / craziest impulsive thing you've done? Like a crazy impulse buy, something you decided to read / do even though you don't need to but because "for a laugh"?
I randomly decided to do a 120-hour #TEFL teaching qualification just for fun! Saw it was on sale, bought into the "sale" marketing, then got certified as a TEFL teacher lol. Not ever done it though.

What is TOEFL?

So far, as I learn #TEFL, I am finding the teachers saying, "This is always true. Well, there is one caveat: in the US they do say it a different way, so I guess it isn't always true. The US way isn't wrong. What do we call that? That's right, a dialect."
Then they briefly mention how the US has more English dialects than anywhere else in the world. Haha that makes sense I guess, but I never thought about it before now.

New publication: "Interview with Steve McCarty" [on his professorial accomplishments in Japan].
The College and University Educators research group of the Japan Association for Language Teaching has honored me with their second annual Veteran Teacher Voices interview on my teaching career in Japan. I critique the foreign language teaching profession, discuss future trends of increasing foreigners in Japan, the need for English, and long-term effects of AI on language acquisition.

Just signed up for a #TEFL course! I'm already doing informal conversations in English, and spending unpaid time preparing for them.

A learner made pictures in our class. He gave an agreement for use of the pictures under the CC-BY-NC-SA^1 license.
I made a program to put the 5 pictures into one image. Another program adds "watermarks" (a license and name) to jpg files before yet another script converts jpgs to svgs.
With permission I may put the programs and these pictures into a git repository.^2

With Inkscape I was able to put the pictures togehter. All of the pictures are together in one image now. To make a square image putting the 5-koma sequence into a 4-koma sequence seems good. If I put the 1st and 2nd panels of the 5-koma sequence togethe the sentences for each picture are:
1.

- 二 (4) This his a hat.
- 三 (4) This is his head. optional
- 四 (4) The hat is on his head.
- 五 (4) This is his hand.
2.
- 一 (8) He will take the hat off his head.
3.
- 一 (8) He is taking the hat off his head.

- 二 (6) The hat is in his hand.

It would be great if students had fediverse accounts and shared their langauge-learning sequences in OnLine-facilitated communities. The drawings should be produced with Free software too. People could transfer drawing from paper to svg, or draw directly to digital with Inkscape or Krita.. There's probably a way to do this with Racket's Pict too.. But for now I think jamming the first 2-koma together is the easiest way to get 4-koma posts from our 5-koma work. #EPGDM #TEFL
