A final 2023 print for #ArtAdventCalendar: I wanted to include a Canadian folktale in #FolktaleWeek2023 so for “found” I illustrated the Mermaid of the Magdalenes. I liked the idea that this fairytale is about something as prosaic as finding tinned sardines.

The baku of Japanese myth was a chimera creature made from leftover parts, with the body of a bear, the claws of a tiger, the tail of a cow, the trunk and tusks of an elephant with the ears and eyes of a rhinoceros, and it eats nightmares! You can call on it if you have bad dreams. 🧵1/2

FOUND - 'Bluebeard'
A fairy tale by Charles Perrault, written in 1695. An archetype of toxic masculinity - a serial murderer whose most recent wife unlocks a forbidden room in his palace and finds the bodies of the unfortunate women who went before her. She drops the magical key to the room and the bloodstains on it later reveal her transgression to Bluebeard.

A literary fairytale from Italy describes a prince marrying a gentle she-bear. It was written by Giambattista Basile in 1634. It involves a prince who falls in love with a princess while she is magically disguised as a bear to escape being killed by the King. In spite of the illusion, love prevails.

A mythical character in European folklore who puts people to sleep and inspires dreams by sprinkling magical sand into their eyes. The character was reinvented by Hans Christian Andersen in 1841, and again by Neil Gaiman in his graphic novels - written between 1989 and 1996.

For the #FolktaleWeek2023 prompt ink I chose a story from Japanese folklore of the suzuri no tamashii. This is my hand-printed lino block print of the Japanese yokai, a sort of supernatural spirit. Specifically it’s what’s called a tsukumogami, a type of spirit which can arise from an object which is used for 100 years, and then it comes alive.

The goddess Persephone, beloved daughter of Demeter was kidnapped by Hades, god of the underworld, and taken to his home where she was tempted with many delicious items.
