  1. Another recent print from #FolktaleWeek2023 for #ArtAdventCalendar: the Sídhe, the Aos sí, the fair folk, the good people, or the people of the shee from Irish folklore, who live underground. You may know the banshee, or Bean sídhe or woman of the sídhe. In fact the very word Sídhe is the term for earthen mounds like the one in my #linocut and the Aos sí are “the people of mounds.” 🧵1/n

  2. #FolktaleWeek #Illusion
Stories are a bit divided on how tanuki disguise themselves. Some claim they are expert shapeshifters. Some claim they are expert illusionists. Others fall somewhere in the middle- tanuki can shapeshift but they use a bit of a glamour to improve their disguise.

  3. ILLUSION - 'The She-Bear'
A literary fairytale from Italy describes a prince marrying a gentle she-bear. It was written by Giambattista Basile in 1634. It involves a prince who falls in love with a princess while she is magically disguised as a bear to escape being killed by the King. In spite of the illusion, love prevails.

  4. For the #FolktaleWeek2023 underground prompt I’ve illustrated the Sídhe, the Aos sí, the fair folk, good people, or people of the shee from Irish folklore, who live underground. You may know the banshee, or Bean sídhe or woman of the sídhe. In fact the very word Sídhe is the term for earthen mounds like the one in my #linocut and the
Aos sí are “the people of mounds.” The Sidhe evolved from a mythological people 🧵1/n

  5. Thinking about the #FolktaleWeek2023 prompt #FolktaleIllusion reminds me of this #linocut illustration from last year of Hans Christian Andersen’s dreamy fairytale ‘The Little Elder Tree Mother’.

In the story a little boy has caught a cold and is sick in bed and his mother brings him a pot of elder tree blossom tea. A kindly old man visits and the boy asks him for a story. 🧵1/n

  6. A real throwback, thinking about the #FolktaleWeek2023 #FolktaleSea theme. This is my moku hanga style wood block print, “Little boat, big ocean.”

This print is actually about what it feels like to do science at sea, and feel like the tiny fisher in the paper boat with unseen dangers below. But, it feels like a fairytale and is expressed metaphorically in the language of magic fairytale illustration.
