So here's the final print, slightly modified from the test print; the carving on some of the blocks has been tidied up, and there's now yellow added to the lantern and a dark gradation at the top making it look more finished.
-
And the first test print doesn't look too bad (though I really like the black keyblock on its own, TBH).
-
And that's the colour blocks now carved. One each for the background, the red kimono and glow in the lantern, and the yellow kimono collar and pattern and the lantern.

I've been teaching myself Japanese woodblock printing - "mokuhanga" - for a bit now, so it might be interesting to post something of my attempts.
My current print is the 'Fuchū' vignette taken from panel 6 of #Hiroshige's 'harimaz-e' series, Pictures of the Fifty-three Stations of the #Tokaido (with slightly modified border proportions to fit the block size).
Nice and simple 🤨
First step: make a digital copy, separating each colour onto its own layer.

Since it rarely snows in #Cologne 🌞, I thought I'd at least bring back some memories of it at home. And what better place for #snow 🌨️ to come from than...#Texas! 😅 I'm not kidding. My latest #woodcutprint comes from Jack (mokudez), a mechanical engineer living in Texas who creates #mokuhanga in his free time. I really love this print and Jack's thoughtful note on the back truely made my day.

While at the Lu Xun museum in Shanghai, found this marvelously detailed woodblock print. Roughly 10cm x 15cm.
Lu Xun was a writer and artist responsible for establishing China’s cultural identity in the early 20th century. He popularized woodblock as a medium of choice for its accessibility and portability.

Went to see the Hiroshige exhibition at the British Museum (https://www.britishmuseum.org/exhibitions/hiroshige-artist-open-road) and it is astonishing. Not just because Hiroshige is a wonderful designer, but the level of craftsmanship in the carving and printing is INSANE.
Spent 2 hours there just wandering from print to print, shaking my head in awe and saying "wow" (well, until I saw 'Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake', and that got a "Holy F*CK").
