  1. My #linocut #tiger for #GlobalTigerDay. Habitat loss is a great threat to these great cats. They are endangered after a century of decline and only about 4,500 remain in the wild. The good news is there are signs of an uptick in numbers globally but the need for habitat preservation is urgent.

  3. @snailrageprints it was a neat project and I learned some things: - I don't particularly like the destruction inherent in the reduction process. I know, I know, all creation is destruction, but I'd rather come out with blocks I could print again and again.
-Getting precise registration (aligning the paper with the printing block) with otherwise delightfully wispy deckled paper edges is an incredible challenge
    - these color inks are not quite as opaque as I was led to believe, I had to do some additional mixing to get the pure green (shown here) to look green at all upon the red in the combined print. (It first came out looking black)

  4. Day 13 #artAdventCalendar This regal (poodle) lady was a recent commission. Sometimes people offer you great photos to work from. I was uncertain about how to carve the curly fur, but my client said, “Oh! the curlz!” so I think I got it ☺️

  7. Some of his findings are subtly alluded to in the layout of the pea flowers, like a Punnett square depicting a cross between two pea plants heterozygous for purple and white blossoms.

*He had initially set out to study the rules determining plant hybrids but was able to later reinterpret his data to look at heredity with a species.

  8. I love the weird and wonderful terms of venery - the collective nouns for groups of animals (and other things). Some are evocative, some strange and obscure.

  10. For #WorldOceanDay I thought I would share a print with both a vertebrate and invertebrate ocean species. This linocut and gel plate print shows the humpback whale swimming above and a close up of the whale below with six Coronula diadema barnacles.

The Coronula diadema name comes from its barrel and crown-like shape, which can grow to 5 cm (2”) tall and 6 cm (2.4”) in diameter. 🧵

  12. It’s my Improbability of Puffins.

I love this term of venery for puffins (who are indeed improbable looking sea birds). It’s part of my series of prints of groups of animals and the weird and wonderful collective nouns to describe them.

  13. April 25 is #WorldPenguinDay so enjoy some Adélie penguins! ⠀

This handsome couple, two Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), common to all the Antarctic coasts, are hand printed in black ink with a hint of orange on white Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. Each print is 12.5” by 9.25” (31.8 cm by 23.5cm). Adélie penguins are the most widely spread and southernly penguins (along with the Emperor penguins).⠀

  14. Happy birthday to #mathematician Felix Klein (1849-1925). This is a hand-carved and hand-printed image of the famous mathematical object, the Klein bottle, printed in a gradient of pale yellow-green to darker blue-green on paper 8” by 8” (20.3 cm by 20.3 cm). First described by mathematician Felix Klein in 1882, this object has a single surface, rather like a 3D version of a Möbius strip. 🧵
