  1. This is one of a series, each unique, of my hand made cyanotypes on watercolour paper (14” x 11”) with an image of a cloud-filled sky overprinted with my linocut print of several kites, and wind-socks each collaged with beautiful Japanese washi papers.

The carp-shaped Koinobori wind socks (also known as satsuki-nobori) are flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, or Children’s Day each May 5.

  2. jesters, clowns, chimney sweeps and musicians. Modern celebrations often feature Morris dancers and green clad revellers. May Day marks the time to celebrate that winter is finally over (in this hemisphere at least) and plants are sprouting!

  3. My beaver lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. This is a North American beaver (Castor canadensis), symbol of Canada. 🇨🇦

April 7 is International Beaver Day. While a species of “least concern” according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, numbers of North American beavers have been literally decimated since colonization. 🧵1/

  5. Apparently January 25 is Moose Day. 🤷‍♀️

    Enjoy this Moose.

A moose lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. Each print is 9.5” tall and 12” wide (24.1 cm by 30.5 cm). This is a North American bull moose (Alces alces), which, confusingly is called an elk in British English.

  6. For #InternationalCoffeeDay: Once I’ve had a coffee, I can face the day, and contemplate doing things which require higher brain functions, like carving letters in reverse, or the molecular structure of caffeine. This is a linoleum block print, in a rich, dark, coffee-brown on beige (like creamy coffee) coloured Japanese kozo paper, 8” by 10” paper (20.3 cm by 25.4 cm). The print is my illustration of a coffee mug 🧵

  7. A raccoon to appreciate for Raccoon Appreciation Day!

I appreciate raccoons; they are really quite extraordinary. This little guy came to my back door like that to politely inquire where I had moved the compost bin to. I snapped his photo and carved his portrait.

Though it appears to be rotund, short-armed mermaid with strange facial markings, the mandriltee is neither fish nor primate and certainly not the composite creature of myth. Their name, however, is inspired by their unlikely ressemblance to the mandrill, and they are of the order Sirenia (which 🧵

Wearing a conical or pyramidal wicker or wooden frame covered in foliage so as to conceal the wearer, the Jack-in-the-Green leads a May Day procession, dancing often with musicians and other figures. 🧵1/2

  17. For the last day of 2024, #InverteFest, #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard: This linocut shows three fireflies (Photinus pyralis, the common eastern firefly or big dipper firefly) in a field against the night sky. Launched July 8, 2003, Opportunity (Oppie to his fans) was active on Mars from 2004 through 2018, looking at Martian geology to evaluate whether Mars has the potential to support life. 🧵1/2

  19. For a wildcard #InsertAnInvert2024 week we’re going back in time all the way to the Cambrian for the Opabinia! The fossils of this soft-bodied 7 cm long animal are found in the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale Lagerstätte (505 million years ago) of British Columbia. Opabinia likely caught prey with the grasping claws on the end of its long tubular proboscis (like an elephant’s trunk). 🧵1/2

The Latin name for a swordfish Xiphias and the two swords make an 'x'. This is good to know if you ever make an alphabet quilt. They are found in temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. 🧵1/2

  25. I am interpreting the prompts quite loosely but I thought I would share this print for #InsertAnInvert2024 as the are ground-nest bees who live near us. My lino block print with collaged Japanese washi papers on a white mulberry leaf paper with bark inclusions shows blossoming cherry branches and two of our wild, native bees: the bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) and the Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria). 🧵1

  26. Another 2023 #linocut for #ArtAdventCalendar:

This is hand-pulled lino block print of the Jack-in-the-Green (or Jack o’ the Green) an English folk tradition for May Day (though he looks a little like a dancing Christmas tree). 28. For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “metallic” my linocut Osmia lignaria, the metallic blue orchard mason bee.

We think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in reeds or natural holes which they divide into chambers with mud walls. We also tend to picture yellow and black stripes, but this small bee is blue to blue-green. 🧵1/2

  29. Butterflies!

It soothed me to make these, for no reason other than the joy of making.

Origami butterflies, all designs by Michael LaFosse.
    Folded mostly with washi papers.

  30. I made 4 more in my series of related prints about leafcutter bees, each unique. Similar to the print in the pollinator garden, but the prints in my shop are on lovely Japanese washi paper & feature different plants. These prints are both about, & a sort of collaboration with leaf cutter bees! These small, but multifarious native bees are important …

  31. I made a second cyanotype of a cloudy sky printed with my Lino block with several different kites and wind socks. Then I printed my block on various beautiful patterned and coloured Japanese washi papers, and collaged them on my image. I did a little embellishment with Posca pen.

The koï-shaped wind socks are traditionally flown in Japan on Children’s Day, May 5.

  32. I felt my cyanotype of a cloudy sky needed more, so I carved a Lino block with several different kites and wind socks and printed it in hill ink over the cyanotype. Then I printed my block on various beautiful patterned and coloured Japanese washi papers, and collaged them on my image. I did a little embellishment with Posca pen. I’m planning a series of these prints.

For #PollinatorWeek: lino block print with collaged Japanese washi papers on a white mulberry leaf paper with bark inclusions shows blossoming cherry branches and two of our wild, native bees: the bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) and the Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria). I printed it by hand on 16" x 20" with various collaged Japanese washi papers for the blossoms, bee bodies and wings.
