  2. #Airisu: The Crow and the Witch

Okiku Part II (Airisu POV): Post 50

“Hurry,” Sumika said, holding out the basket. “Lady Osakabe’s crows are coming.”

I looked towards the castle and saw black dots growing larger by the second. It was too late to escape, so I did the only thing possible: I hopped into the basket.

“Clicky, clack, crolark.” It was cramped and smelled nasty in there. The only saving grace was that I could peer through the #warped weave.

Mistress draped a kimono sleeve over the basket, and my panic swelled. I had to use the human portion of my brain to force it down, reminding myself that if I struggled, I would damage my wings and feathers.

    “Ack!!!” I cawed.

    “Quiet! They’ll hear you!”

This was hard. I considered sticking my head out. That would make things much better. Then I heard a jumble of large-bills cawing.

“I don’t recognise her,” cawed the first voice.

“She's an outsider,” responded a second voice.

“I sense magic. Has a kitsune possessed her?” asked a third jungle crow.

“We must tell the Lady,” the second large-billed cawed.

“Clicktoo, look for a kitsune,” a commanding voice said. “The rest of you fly to the Lady and inform her a spirit summoner lurks in the town. I’ll watch her and come later.”

There was the sound of wings and then silence.

Ha ha,” I thought. “My mistress is so smart! We showed those stupid spawn of a cowbird.

I peeked out between the willow lathes and saw we were moving down the road. That explained the basket’s rocking. Up and down, I bounced, knocking against the sides. It was all I could do not to swear or say, “Stop that, you lumbering ox!

  3. #Airisu: The Crow and the Witch

    Dōken-sha (Airisu POV) Post 18

It was too late to turn back. Behind us, the trail no longer looked the same. We had crossed a #threshold into the Shadow Land, Kakuriyo.

The monks beckoned us forward. “Bake ichō no sei,” I cooed to Sumika. “Ginkgo kodama, spirits of the ginkgo trees.”

Sumika prepared to visit the shrine by washing her mouth and hands in the mountain spring. I hopped down. The darting of little fish fascinated me for a moment. Then I washed. The drops of water were cool on my back, but not unpleasant.

Cleansed, Sumika clapped and rang the bell, accompanied by the monk’s gongs.

Light gathered over the kabuto, folding inward until it took the shape of a young man, straight-backed, hawk-faced, as composed as Lord Confucius. His austere dark robes were bound with a simple corded sash. Indigo light seeped along the cord binding the ledger tucked under his arm. In his other hand, he held a closed black lacquer fan. Energy gathered there as well. A small handscroll rested at his waist, secured as neatly as a blade.

My first instinct was to fly to a safer distance. His stillness wasn’t of calm, but of judgment. He hadn’t been a man who scattered peanuts for idle birds. This had been a person who counted to the last grain of rice.

“Minor samurai, administrator, Confucian scholar,” I cooed to Sumika. She would owe so me many peanuts!

“Ack!” Sumika made a deep ninety-degree bow, taking me completely by surprise.

  7. Day 28 - Forest Spirits

I've been intending to do Kodama. Did my own twist on them being spectral energy attached to the trees

  8. Having just finished Julian Sedgwick and Chie Kusuwada's rather wonderful 100 Tales From the Tokyo Ghost Cafe (just out from Guppy Books), I have selected some appropriate viewing for this evening: 1964 Japanese classic, Kwaidan, which shares a number of the same fokloric influences.

  9. Kyodo News picked up the story of my collaboration with Nagano-san at the Fukui Prefectural Archives to put a spotlight on Fukui's local (and previously hidden) kwaidan.
