  1. FOUND - 'Bluebeard'
A fairy tale by Charles Perrault, written in 1695. An archetype of toxic masculinity - a serial murderer whose most recent wife unlocks a forbidden room in his palace and finds the bodies of the unfortunate women who went before her. She drops the magical key to the room and the bloodstains on it later reveal her transgression to Bluebeard.

Strega Nona has been one of my favorite #KidLit characters since I was small. She lives with Bambolona & Big Anthony. Everyone assumes they are Strega Nona’s kids, but they meet & form a family over many books. I love this example of a Family of Choice, aka Found Family

  3. I wanted to include a Canadian folktale so my final #FolktaleWeek2023 #FolktaleWeekFound illustration is of the Mermaid of the Magdalenes. I liked the idea that this fairytale is about something as prosaic as finding tinned sardines.

The rugged east coast Magdalene Islands are all but barren of grass & trees, but the waters are rich in fish and people called it the “Kingdom of Fishes”.
