Hans Christian Andersen nació en 1805 en Odense, Dinamarca, en una pobreza extrema.
Hijo de un zapatero y de una lavandera analfabeta, creció entre la miseria y una imaginación desbordante.
Su padre le transmitió el amor por las historias; su madre, profundamente supersticiosa, le inculcó el miedo a la muerte y a lo desconocido.
Desde niño se sintió distinto: alto, torpe y de rasgos exagerados, fue blanco constante de burlas.
Esa herida nunca se cerró.

Con solo 14 años se marchó a Copenhague convencido de que estaba destinado a algo grande.
Lo que encontró fue hambre, rechazo y humillación. Intentó ser actor y cantante, fracasó, y sobrevivió gracias a mecenas que lo protegían como a un ser frágil y extraño.
Esa dependencia marcó su carácter: Andersen necesitó siempre aprobación, afecto y cuidado.

Cuando empezó a escribir, no inventó cuentos: volcó su dolor en ellos.
Por eso sus versiones originales son tan oscuras y tan alejadas de la dulzura posterior de Disney 🕯️.

El patito feo es su retrato más claro: un ser rechazado por su apariencia y su origen, condenado a la soledad antes de cualquier reconocimiento.
No es una historia optimista, sino una confesión de exclusión.

La sirenita es aún más cruel.
En el relato original, cada paso le provoca un dolor insoportable.
El príncipe nunca la ama y ella renuncia a matarlo para salvarse, arrojándose al mar y convirtiéndose en espuma.
Disney eliminó el sacrificio silencioso y el amor no correspondido, el núcleo real del cuento.

El soldadito de plomo tampoco ofrece consuelo: el soldado y la bailarina acaban quemados en la chimenea.
Solo queda un corazón de plomo deformado.

La vendedora de fósforos muestra una pobreza tan extrema que la muerte es el único descanso posible.
No hay milagro ni rescate, solo una niña que muere sola en la calle.
Disney nunca tocó este cuento por su crudeza.

Sus historias fueron suavizadas porque hablaban sin filtros de dolor, renuncia y muerte.
Andersen no escribía para proteger al lector, sino para ser honesto.

Su vida amorosa fue una sucesión de amores no correspondidos.
Amó intensamente a Edvard Collin, que nunca pudo corresponderle; cuando se casó, Andersen quedó devastado.
También amó a Jenny Lind, que lo rechazó con cariño fraternal, y nunca olvidó a Riborg Voigt, cuya carta guardó hasta la tumba.
Todo apunta a que murió virgen, atrapado entre el deseo y una culpa religiosa 💔.

Vivía además dominado por fobias: miedo a ser enterrado vivo, al fuego, al envenenamiento y a la enfermedad.
Dormía con una nota que decía “solo parece que estoy muerto” y viajaba con una cuerda para escapar de incendios.
Era hipocondríaco, ansioso y supersticioso.

Su carácter hacía difícil la convivencia, como demuestra el episodio con Charles Dickens.
La relación empezó con admiración mutua, pero en 1857, invitado por unas semanas a su casa, Andersen se quedó cinco.
Necesitaba atención constante, lloraba ante cualquier crítica y se quejaba sin parar.
La familia acabó exhausta.
Al marcharse, Dickens dejó una nota irónica y jamás volvió a responderle una carta.
Para Andersen fue otro rechazo devastador.

Murió en 1875, a los 70 años, tras una vida de fama pública y miseria emocional privada.
Su funeral fue un acto de Estado.
Dinamarca entera lo despidió.
El patito feo fue reconocido como cisne… demasiado tarde para que él pudiera creerlo.

Andersen no escribió cuentos infantiles.
Escribió cuentos sobre la herida humana.
Disney los suavizó, pero la verdad sigue ahí, intacta.

The Danish writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen travelled to Spain in 1862. Shortly after returning, he published a spirited travel book, In Spain, which also includes a number of quasi-sensual poems.

'The Lotus Flower' [Lotusblomsten] is one of these poems that show a lesser known side of the poet.
