  4. Ether anesthesia was used for the first time OTD in 1842, in an operation by the surgeon Dr. Crawford Long, but it wasn't the first use of anesthetic gases toilet-guru.com/delphi.html?s= #anesthesiology #history

  5. General anesthesia, regardless of the specific pharmaceutical agent used, induces unconsciousness by fundamentally disrupting the brain's delicate balance between stability and excitability. Although different drugs target varying receptors, they all produce a universal destabilization pattern that ultimately ceases conscious neural activity.

  11. Effects of the design of operating rooms/theatres on safety is vastly underestimated . In this new study we looked at improving the delays for calling for help using an emergency buzzer by making it more visible using a red line from the ceiling to the buzzer.
Installing the line more than halved the number of times calling for help was delayed.

"My good deed for the week. A 🧵

Halfway through my endo list yesterday the DSU nurse came in.
“The last patient's arrived with his mother. He’s autistic and says he gets seizures when he is overstimulated.” She handed me his file. “There’s a letter from the neurologist”.

  14. @flavia_feijo_epi Correct! Blue urticaria is pretty much pathognomic of allergy to patent blue dye. A dye which is often used in the identification of sentinel nodes in breast surgery.
These reactions are often found in the post-anaesthetic care unit because, unlike most intravenous drugs causing perioperative anaphylaxis they cause delayed rather than immediate reactions.
