  9. Medicine has suffered the full effects of the scientific outpouring of information. ... As a stopgap measure, medical schools have kept the total number of years constant, but have lengthened the per-week teaching load. Thus medical students at Harvard attend twice as many hours of classes per week as law or business students. Of necessity, this makes medical education a very passive business and deprives the student of the single most important thing he desperately needs to learn while at school -- how to initiate the educational process for himself, later on, when he is a practitioner.

  15. The Art of Language: Words Matter

By Adam Widdison, author of The Expert Clinician The words we use help shape the conversation. In my previous post, The Art of Conversation, I explored why the consultation is a purposeful exchange rather than a simple transfer of information. Here I examine how the choice and delivery of our words can determine whether that exchange succeeds. Patients respond not only to the medical content of what we say, but also to the words we choose and the way we deliver them. This can feel […]

  16. The Art of Conversation

By Adam Widdison, author of The Expert Clinician A consultation is, at its heart, a conversation—but not an ordinary one. It is a purposeful exchange in which the patient and the healthcare professional (HCP) are both trying to understand something, and each holds information the other needs. Treating patients as people with a problem from the first moment is essential if we are to deliver compassionate care. The opening of the consultation establishes the aims and initial focus. Once […]

  17. 1600 comments and counting on Facebook. All on my post about my experiences in the COVID ICU. About 2/3 of them are supportive. About 1/3 are hateful and even threatening. Several of them had to be reported to law enforcement as credible threats.

I keep seeing two common comments among the fascist MAGA cult members. One is about the vaccine killing millions of people. The other is about Remdesivir killing billions of people. The same Remdesivir their Lord and Savior Donald Jesus Trump took and called a miracle drug. (foxnews.com/politics/president)

The COVID vaccine that their God Trump took is also in the crosshairs. But didn’t he take credit for creating the vaccine? So he created it but it killed millions and thus it is evil! (fox29.com/news/trump-takes-cre)

And even Trump himself took the very same vaccine! (apnews.com/article/coronavirus)

Another widely debunked claim was that hospitals and doctors made extra money by claiming deaths were from COVID. (factcheck.org/2020/04/hospital) Yet, there is not factual basis for that claim. Even if it were true, that money would have been set by the current federal administration which at the time was Trumps administration. So we are to believe that Trump authorized paying more to hospitals and doctors to lie about the number of COVID deaths?

One last claim to look at. No one died of anything but COVID in 2020 and 2021. This is by far the more ignorant of the claims. The CDC itself refutes this as do various state governmental agencies. I have attached to charts below to show that COVID wasn’t even the leading cause of deaths in the USA. Yes, COVID was bad as a single cause and overwhelmed an already strained medical system. But it was not the only cause of death in those years.

  23. Been a while since I did any #medicaleducation shitposting.

Tonight’s beer talk: Epi and cardiac arrest.

Epinephrine (adrenaline) is often used during cardiac arrest. Why? Well, it makes heart muscle more exciteable, which is great if you want sleepy muscle to become super zombie muscle while you resuscitate someone. It also makes the heart squeeze harder, and it shrinks peripheral blood vessels (makes the tank smaller so more blood can make it to the brain and kidneys).

  24. One positive from this study: knowing Long COVID exists and can raise heart‑disease risk must drive better training for health staff — so more clinicians recognise its serious impacts and patients aren’t missed.
