  1. Do we need a better cage for AI — or a better membrane?
AI safety is not always a property of the model alone.
Safe components can combine into unsafe systems. Nine agreeing AIs may still share one underlying source. Permission to act is not the same as evidence that the action is wise. And an acceptable decision can become dangerous when its consequences cannot be reversed.
So perhaps we should examine the whole route:
    Source → Interpretation → Authority → Capability → Action → Outcome
    and ask about:
    Provenance • Independence • Composition • Authority • Reversibility
Walls stop things crossing. Membranes govern what crosses, how, and under what conditions.
    Perhaps AI governance needs both.
A Better Membrane, Not Merely a Better Cage

  6. Someone asked about our "improved, translated and automated" NASA-TLX this morning. I noticed that the wiki abstract was somewhat unclear and expanded it: osf.io/mnxfu/wiki I also noticed that the "official" version seems to have disappeared from the NASA website since last time I checked...

  7. The NASA-TLX (1986) is the most frequently used measure for workload, but it's often not used as intended (only raw scores, without pair-wise comparisons and individual weighting).

I have converted the materials and instructions to editable Word-files that should be easier to use, and have provided an Excel sheet for calculation of the scores.

So far we've translated the English materials into Norwegian, Dutch, Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Finnish. Please see the how-to on the project page if you'd consider translating to other languages (and be listed as contributor).

  8. I would implore the #media to educate themselves on these subtleties for future articles.

I would also invite everyone to review Liza Dixon's seminal work on #autonowashing - a dangerous over-exaggeration of automated driving system capabilities: lizadixon.com/Autonowashing

Liza is on the 🐦 site here: twitter.com/lizadixon

Liza has always been steadfast at helping the media and the broader public understand these technologies from a #HumanFactors perspective.

    That is it.

    Happy #Monday!
