I've long suspected that the user created guardrails and context guidelines they are encouraged to put into things like agents.md are an intentional exploitation of the placebo effect as I have worked on LLM technology in the past and this flies in the face of how they actually work. No context can ever significantly change the output of a contextless system.

When was the earliest study of acupuncture that used sham needles (superficial needles that don’t do anything) to trigger a placebo healing effect? There appears to have been numerous studies on this topic, but the earliest one I found was this https://www.southampton.ac.uk/news/2005/05/beyond-the-placebo-effect.page from 2005.
I swear I had heard about similar studies in the 1990s. Was I mistaken?
