  1. OK anxiety, I get it. You can stop now. We did an ok job at work today and there is no reason that the evening couldn't be a successful one, too.

I think I have too many open loops right now: Too many tabs, too much to read, too many things I want to change, too many projects and todos. Too many people waiting for me. The dog needs to be walked, too!

Started with browser tab and feed reader and read-it-later bankruptcy. Now the dog.

A recent STAT letter to the editor included a message from the former director of a Phoenix lab. When Theranos rolled out its products there, this writer said he heard from former colleagues about frustrations.

  4. Null Safe(r) Java with NullAway
    A blog by Jorrit

After working on Kotlin projects for over seven years, I recently started on a Java project again. One of the things I missed most was the fact that Kotlin explicitly supports nullability as part of its type system. Within the first day I ran into a NullPointerException. Luckily, we can now add compile-time null checks to Java as well, making Java null safe(r)!

Roll 19717328, cont.: UC Riverside (1971-72)

One: Our news editor, Michele McLellan. She later joined the editorial staff of the Riverside Press-Enterprise, then the dominant newspaper in our region.

When shown prints of these photos back then, people would report a strange feeling that they had seen this face before. The reason: When they were very little, Michele and her brother were the models for the 1950s version of the Campbell's Soup Kids.

  6. Happy #AceWeek! Piece from several years ago.

I fall under demirose - one of a few ways to shorten DemiAromantic - DemiAsexual.

I'm not going into extensive detail, but I will say that speed dating sounds like unprecedented torture.

  7. There's _very_ few options for 200mm ARGB fans in the UK. But I just replaced one of the two front fans on my wife's PC because it was starting to grind.

And now there's three annoying things:
    1) I didn't think about fan depth (they're normally fairly consistent!) and it's deeper and so the case front won't fully attach 😑
    2) They're now two different brands (because there was only one left in stock) and so the lights aren't in sync yet 😐
    3) I had to swap over extra cables because I'd previously connected the old fan to fan power 1 and ARGB 2 on the splitter board! Not that it makes a difference when they're both front fans and you're not syncing speed to colour or anything, but it was still Mixed Up And Wrong™! 😬

  8. Wix gets mocked as the beginner builder, and then it quietly hosts 647,550 domains. The joke stops being funny at that scale. Beginners built a real chunk of the web, one drag and drop at a time.

  9. Lately I've been wondering how to handle security vulnerability reports for my (volunteer) projects. Specifically:

    1. Do we really need to keep vulnerability reports confidential? If private, that means I am the only one who can fix it, and I might not have the time/interest. Some other important bugs are not reported privately, and many projects are not public-facing network servers. If the vulnerability was found via an LLM, anyone can throw an LLM at the codebase and find it too with little effort.
    2. How much do I really need to care about CVEs? This is just time-consuming paperwork for me. I understand it might be important for security researcher recognition.
    3. What happens if the security vulnerability isn't patched in a timely manner, or by the end of the embargo period? Should I feel bad? What if it affects the reputation of the software? I don't want this stuff to invade my life.

I very much care about making things right for users, but I don't know how to balance things out with a healthy maintainer role.

Real men don't grind day and night just to flex some shallow bank account or buy useless garbage. They chase financial dominance for one reason: to weaponize that cash and shield the people they love from every single hardship. If you aren't stacking money to protect your circle, you're just selfish.

  14. New paper in the wild!
Dolomite is a weird mineral, for many reasons. One of which is that most of it is old. But there is a bit of new dolomite, such as in the Abu Dhabi sabkhas, and we used those to control for the seawater signals dolomite retains.

  16. #WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.10.25 — Tell us about inspiration from an unlikely source.

A song. That's actually happened three times.

The second time led to a sale. The song was Another One Bites the Dust by Queen, which led to an image of deer-human hybrids on roller blades shooting down an urban street inside an abandoned McNeil colony. Writing that near-Earth adventure story led to an interesting supporting character whose backstory I developed into a treatment for a YA SF novel, which I wrote and sold to a major New York publisher.

  18. Went to see the iPhone Duo at the Apple store. Think I agree with the general takes that as a "sit down and consume stuff" device it's incredible, but as a one-handed "get quick info and get out" on-the-go experience, the closed form-factor is a bit unwieldy. 🤷‍♂️
