  1. @ibboard
Nice call-out between what I call deterministic vs statistical computing. I’m on the fence re statistical computing i.e. AI LLMs etc. There have been amazing breakthroughs and LLMs are useful in some scenarios. But horses for courses - the current AI mania is forcing people to deploy LLMs for tasks better suited to deterministic computing (example: automation of repetitive tasks) Hopefully things will calm down over time and there will be industry guidelines on when statistical algorithms should be used, and with what guardrails, and when they shouldn’t (not reliable enough, too expensive, insecure, inscrutable, etc.). The current move towards exposing the true AI usage costs to users will help #AI #LLMs

  2. Does anyone have any good recommendations on things to put in an `llms.txt` file on your website? Apparently it's a pseudo-standard now and LLMs may read it to get a "better understanding" of your website before processing it.

My current content is here: ibboard.co.uk/llms.txt

  3. In case anyone wants it - 100 lines of colours (including Tango Project palette) and 100 lines of overrides to get a good approximation of the Adwaita Dark Green theme that I used to maintain, but with less maintenance effort required!

  4. I can't believe that one of the schools managed to get Sir David Attenborough to stand there at their spring for over a week. He's 100 years old! You can't do that to a centenarian!

  9. Just posted some (unedited) photos from Malvern's 2026 Well Dressing event. There's a _lot_ of natural springs around Malvern (which is known for its water, which the Victorians used for its supposed healing properties). So every May Day then they dress all of the springs and wells (and even water pumps and baptismal fonts!).

    This year's theme was Birds.

Yeah! ArchWiki is the best! :archlinux:

  11. Checked out some of the dressed wells in Malvern this weekend. The theme was "folklore and fairy tales".

By far the best two: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Eco Bhakti Sangha's Krishna and Kaliya (with SO MANY BANGLES making the snake!)

Now I just need to sort through the pics, crop and edit 😐

Edit: ibboard.co.uk/gallery/gallery. (no edits, just the best photos straight from the camera)

  12. Reported the #ibus pre-edit text problem. Found out it was already fixed (but the bug report didn't report the same error as me… or the same behaviour!)

But my new package with just that change _has_ fixed the issue. So if you're using ibus 1.5.29 and have lingering pre-edit text, try this patch (or my package, if you're on #openSUSE Tumbleweed):

    build.opensuse.org/package/vie

  13. I don't have to poke journalctl very much. But I'm trying to see whether Gnome Shell is logging anything. And… it's not helpful 😐

I thought I'd be able to filter with `-u gnome-shell`. But apparently that's only for Systemd units. And Gnome Shell isn't one. So all of those logs that are prefixed `gnome-shell[pid]:` can't be trivially filtered with the clearly-documented commands.

Apparently you need the SUPER well documented `journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=gnome-shell` option 🙄

  14. Okay. Looks like it might be an extension problem. There's cases going back to at least 2021.

Which means that my options are "don't have dynamic workspaces" or "have crap, useless, 'stack the windows on top of each other' window placement behaviour" 😑

  15. Just realised that my Gnome desktop has stopped dynamically allocating workspaces. So I start with two. Put my music player on the second workspace. And it doesn't create a third 😐

Settings are correct. And forcing a static 3 workspaces works. It just isn't being dynamic.

This _may_ explain why the Smart AutoMove NG extension isn't moving my media player to the second workspace automatically. Possibly.

  16. Computer Science for 60+ years: We've made these machines that can follow instructions EXACTLY and do it consistently and repeatedly at high speed. And they're getting faster AND smaller OR more power-efficient!

Computer Science for the last few years: What if we THROW ALL THAT AWAY and instead we make it so that you've got to imprecisely and inefficiently tell the machine what to do AND WHAT NOT TO DO, and every response is a crapshoot as to whether it a) works, b) gives the same answer as before and c) isn't making stuff up. Please don't compare energy bills.

  17. Unfortunately, today's work required me to edit the part of the system that calls OpenAI. And…

I don't think I can overstate just how much I *hate* every single interaction with GenAI. It's viscerally unpleasant and actively soul-destroying.

If my choice is between interacting with a turn-of-the-millennium Flash site or prompting a chat bot then I'm taking the Flash site. Every. Single. Time.

If my career options end up as "continue to be a Data Engineer but you've got to do everything with GenAI now" or "become a Windows SysAdmin for a secondary school (11-16 year olds)" then the ONLY thinking I'm doing is "what needs to change so that we can afford the pay cut" 😐

  23. Me at work: Here's an example of where Copilot performed "analysis" of data based on tags and pre-existing training instead of the (actually identical) data it was given. And then it bullshitted some statistics when probed. Be careful when you trust GenAI to do analysis for you.

Colleague: Everyone knows that Copilot is rubbish.

Me, in my head: Yes, that's exactly the message to take home here 🙄
