  4. 🎉 Welcome to the Proton Meet, where escape from the CLOUD Act is promised, yet hilariously undermined by... using the CLOUD Act infrastructure! 🤦‍♂️ Their privacy policy is as transparent as their grasp on #irony, leaving you wondering if their marketing team was on vacation. 🌩️✨

  7. 👀 Oh, joy! People actually read privacy policies now—who knew? 🙄 Cape and Proton must be so proud of their "genius" #experiment that took a whole two weeks to crack. 🎉 Next time, maybe hide a free trip to the moon—at least that would be original. 🌝

  9. Every so often, I am surprised at the outcome of an interaction like this. I replied to the new volunteer coordinator and expressed my displeasure, that I did not consent to transferring any of my personal info to that US company, and that they should just continue emailing me directly.

Usually at this point, I get weaselly or misinformed answers: "Oh, it's nothing" "Oh, it's not personal information, it's just your name, email address, location..." "But they have a privacy policy" [1] "Oh, I hadn't read their TOS or privacy policy, but I'm sure they would never ..."

Not this time. Their response, slightly distilled, was "We will continue emailing you directly as requested."

I set a low bar when it comes to expecting organizations to understand privacy issues, but every so often someone actually clears it. Makes a nice change.

[1] I'm not sure why [2] most companies even write a long, convoluted privacy policy when they all seem to contain "We reserve the right to make any changes to this policy at any time without notice or consent", and therefore the entire policy could be replaced with the sentence "We'll do what we want with your data, and we might tell you about it afterwards if we feel like it."

[2] A rhetorical device. Of course we all know the actual reason is to ensure no one will read the policy before agreeing to it.

  10. TikTok Ownership shift. Privacy panic. Misinformation.

In our latest @sharedsecurity podcast episode co-host Kevin Tackett joins me to discuss what really changed (and didn’t) in TikTok’s privacy policy after its U.S. deal and why some users are walking away.

What do you think about the new TikTok ownership? Let me know in the comments!

  15. Interesting ... if you want more privacy, this site lists things like installing an adblocker and blocking cookies as options. Pretty honest....

For opting out of advertisement emails, they tell you to click the unsubscribe link. Kinda IMO

  16. I just read a website's privacy policy prior to making a purchase, and discovered that they quite openly state that they will share or sell my personal information (including contact details) with other businesses for advertizing purposes, and that those unnamed businesses will use said personal information in accordance with their own privacy policies, whatever those may happen to be.

I have emailed the business I actually want to buy from, and asked if an offline transaction is possible, as otherwise, I will be taking my custom elsewhere.

Easier said than done, however, as I am not aware of any other NZ retailer selling a fude nibbed dip pen - or any fude nibbed pen at all, if it comes to that, actual brush tips aside.

  20. I simply love how @Codeberg handles the Privacy Policy updates!

They put out a pointer to a git commit, to the privacy policy:

    codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/src/

And through the diff view, you can see the changes they did here:
    codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/comm

(For the non-git/forgejo/codeberg aware users: Towards the top right of the web page, there's a parent reference, click that to see the change before the one currently viewed).

This is what EVERYONE should be doing.

  22. Ah, the nostalgia of HN history, now reduced to a chatbot experience that demands your soul via Google login 😒. But don't worry, agreeing to the privacy policy is just a formality—like reading it! 🤡 Because nothing screams "19 years of evolution" quite like a login page masquerading as #innovation. 🚀

Due to a recent update of Mozilla FireFox (MFF/FF) terms of service (addition) and an updated privacy policy of their web browser: You will no longer use it, instead find a downstream of FF or simply a google chromium downstream such as Ungoogled Chromium or LibreWolf/Tor Browser, and leave FF behind for good this time.

  24. If you're using #Adobe #Acrobat you might want to check if your organization allows use of the by default enabled generative AI features: Acrobat sends the documents to cloud for processing, which likely goes against the data #privacypolicy of many orgs.

If unsure, go to Preferences > Generative AI and deselect "Enable generative AI features in Acrobat".
