  1. Mainstream Media Continues to Dismantle Itself

It’s been an accepted part of conventional wisdom for quite some time that what we consider mainstream media is gradually fading away in the face of newer generations turning to other sources available on the Internet for news and entertainment. Heck, even some older generations are turning what used to be the dial.

The business models have suffered for a while now whether it’s print, broadcast or cable. The fading away has gained new and seemingly panicked momentum thanks to the depredations of the Trump administration, aided by the greedy cowardice of the corporations worried more about avoiding the wrath of the beast they helped create, than the standards they all proudly trumpeted for years. Those trumpets have largely fallen silent or just ring hollow.

The end of late night comedy shows captured a lot of attention recently, but eventually most broadcast scripted news and entertainment will also give way. Which is ironic given that the convicted felon largely responsible for this quickening pace came to prominence via Reality TV, which let me tell you is anything but reality and is very scripted.

Now NBC Universal, owned by Comcast, is making a move away from MSNBC, attempting to distance the Peacock from controversy by rebranding as MS Now. That little branding acronym stands for  My Source | News | Opinion | World.

Yeesh. I guess the marketing department was the first place they made changes. As a social media friend Judgment Dave says, “it sounds like a translation of something in Japanese that doesn’t translate well into English.”

It’s weird, yet it isn’t to hang onto the ‘MS’, given that MSNBC was birthed as partnership with Microsoft and NBC, long since dissolved. Somewhere Bill Gates is laughing because it also sounds like a software program delivered on a CD-ROM.

Whatever sturm and drang comes from this news of the moment, (news of the Now?) the bigger picture is that these troubled corporations, in what feels like desperate efforts to try and save themselves, are essentially hastening their eventual final curtains in the wake of current trends already overtaking them.

Some may lay blame on the rise of the Internet and mobile devices in every hand, but the fact of the matter is the smart folks at the top of these corporations missed the moment. Some eventually tried to make changes. Remember CNN Plus? But in my opinion their failures were less about the delivery mechanisms and more about the decline of the news and entertainment products that they delivered as the cost cutters held sway.

NBCUniversal isn’t done trimming the sails yet. Plans are in place to spinoff other properties as well (CNBC, USA, Oxygen, and E!).

Some will blame it on advertisers seeking the best way to reach customers. That’s mostly true, but ask podcasters how that’s going for them these days. Chasing advertising revenue is always a cyclical game for just about everything except sports.

It’s no wonder then that it feels like we see our politics more and more resembling blood sports. Of course the irony is audiences claim they want less, not more in that realm. What will be interesting to see in the next decade or so is how political advertising, which fills so many corporate media coffers sorts itself out, once the usual outlets fade away as they continue to play to ever diminishing audiences that keep spreading themselves wider and wider, attempting to flee the same old, same old.

Certainly ads will continue to be designed to run on social media and circulate that way. But the only folks making real money off of that trend are the political consultants and ad-makers.

I hope I’m around to see how my grandkids eventually consume what we once revered and respected as the news. I’ll regale them with what I imagine they will view as fairy tales and myths.

  4. SWANSEA: Thousands of old cancer centre X-rays destroyed — but their silver is heading to the Royal Mint

Thousands of old X-ray films from Swansea’s cancer centre are being destroyed – but not before the silver they contain has been extracted and sold on to the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, where it could end up as Welsh jewellery.

Staff at the South West Wales Cancer Centre at Singleton Hospital teamed up with specialist metal extraction firm Betts to recover silver from more than 8,000 X-ray films that had passed their retention period and were due for destruction.

The process generated a rebate of more than £1,000 for the radiotherapy department.

Anna Iles, interim head of service for radiotherapy, said the films were a legacy of an older era of cancer treatment. “Historically, for radiotherapy treatment we would produce hard copy X-ray films to verify treatment,” she said. “Now it’s all done electronically.”

The films had originally been stored in the radiotherapy department at Singleton, but as the department expanded the space was needed for other uses.

They were moved to an external storage facility in Cardiff – at a cost to the health board.

When Swansea Bay University Health Board later acquired its own storage facility in Llansamlet, space became available at Singleton for the films to be brought back from Cardiff. That repatriation in itself generated a significant saving for the department.

Of the more than 16,000 X-rays held in storage, around half had passed their retention period and could be lawfully destroyed. Rather than simply disposing of them, the team identified that the films contained recoverable silver and linked up with Betts to extract it.

The process required careful sign-off before it could go ahead. “We worked closely with colleagues in information governance to get sign off that we could send the X-rays to Betts, where they extracted the silver and we then got a rebate of more than £1,000,” said Iles.

The story has an additional Welsh twist. While Betts is based in England, the firm works in partnership with the Royal Mint in Llantrisant – meaning the silver recovered from X-rays taken in Swansea could return to Wales in an entirely new form.

“Betts works in partnership with the Royal Mint, selling the recovered silver, which is then used in the creation of jewellery,” said Iles. “It is quite nice that there is the potential for the silver to come full circle back to Wales.”

The remaining 8,000 or so films that are still within their retention period will continue to be stored until they too can be lawfully destroyed – at which point the same silver extraction process is expected to be repeated.

The South West Wales Cancer Centre provides radiotherapy and oncology services for patients across the Swansea Bay University Health Board area and beyond. It is based at Singleton Hospital on the edge of Swansea Bay.

Swansea Bay University Health Board says the project demonstrates how clinical teams can find creative and sustainable ways to generate savings and reduce waste – while also ensuring sensitive patient information is securely destroyed in the process.

    #UniversityOfMaine’s #USDA funding restored

    by WABI News Desk
Published: Mar. 12, 2025 at 9:05 PM EDT

Maine (WABI) - "Senator #SusanCollins announced Wednesday that the University of Maine’s funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been restored.

"On Monday the University received notice that funding from the USDA was paused.

"According to UMS, the notice stated the pause was temporary while the USDA evaluated potential follow-up actions related to prospective Title VI (6) or Title IX (9) violations.

    "Collins released at statement saying:

'This USDA funding is critically important not only to the University of Maine, but to our farmers and loggers, as well as to the many people who work in #Maine’s #agriculture, #aquaculture, and #forestry industries. Now that funding has been restored, the work that the University does in partnership with the many people and communities who depend on these programs can continue.'"

  8. Ready To Level Up? Looking Back at 2025 and the Four-Body Problem Facing Scotland in 2026

As we head rapidly for the holidays, it’s time for the Scottish Games Network (me) to do what we always promise: be the ‘Honest Architect’ for our ecosystem. That means celebrating the victories, acknowledging the foundations we’ve laid, and – most importantly – address the real structural challenges waiting for us in the new year.

2025 has been, frankly, turbulent. We’ve seen national highs – like some of the excellent events springing up across the whole of Scotland, the new talent support from organisations such as SGDA, Game Space (and SGN) – but also the deep, personal impact of global layoffs and job losses across our whole community.

Yet, despite the headwinds, the belief in our sector’s potential has never been higher. My personal highlight of the year was delivering the closing keynote at the TechUK Digital Economy Conference. The response in the room to the potential of games, their value to the UK’s tech sector and the ‘More Than Games’ mindset was incredible. I’ve had more connections and strategic conversations following that event than almost any other. It proved to me that the external appetite for understanding and engaging with games as a central economic and cultural engine is huge. The doors are open. I’ll ensure that more events like this happen in 2026.

The Victory: The Scottish Games Action Plan

The biggest victory of 2025 is the completion of our ‘billion-pound blueprint’. Yes, after two years, I’m delighted to share that the Scottish Games Action Plan is complete. The final notes are with the graphic designer, and I’ll be sharing the completed document with trusted individuals in the coming days. We are now actively looking for the perfect launch date and venue in early 2026.

The Games Action Plan is our collective roadmap. Based on over 1000 data points, drawn from over 250 organisations and individuals across Scotland, it is detailed, strategic, and gives us a unified voice to take to government, education, and the wider creative sector. The goal is simple, make Scotland, the UK’s first games ‘supercluster’.

    The Challenge: The Four-Body Problem

However, as we look to execute the Games Action Plan in 2026, we must address the single biggest risk to its success: fragmentation.

We now have four separate, significant, and well-intentioned organisations operating in very similar areas within the ecosystem:

    1. SGN: The independent, non-profit ecosystem builder. Online resource hub, editorial channel, event organiser, educator and advocacy org.
    2. SGDA: By game developers, for game developers, focused on studio membership, Scottish-Government-funded to run the developer accelerator
    3. GameSpace: Business-focused ecosystem org, running the UK-Government-funded business incubator.
    4. IES (Interactive Entertainment Scotland): The new Scottish arm of the UK trade body, UKIE. Focused on advocacy and policy.

All four are critically important, but the sheer number of initiatives running in parallel creates the potential for confusion, duplication of effort, and – most dangerously – dilution of the limited resources and attention span of our public sector partners.

The Question for 2026 is simple: How do we align?

As the Honest Architect (and OG), I must question how we ensure every one of these initiatives works together to support the Games Action Plan. We cannot afford to have these great new organisations pulling in different directions. The challenge for all four organisations – myself included – is to establish a framework for collaboration, synergy, and clear boundaries that benefit the entire Scottish games ecosystem.

I’ve already spoken to the teams at SGDA and Game Space. I hope to catch up with the new policy advisor from IES in early January.

2026: Scottish Games ‘Fest’ and a Call to Action

On a personal note, I will be looking to focus my efforts on two key areas next year: making the Games Action Plan a reality and making Scotland’s games ecosystem more visible, connected and collaborative.

I am thrilled to formally tease the biggest announcement on the SGN calendar: the inaugural Scottish Games ‘Fest’ (SGF), scheduled for September 2026. This will be a multi-day event designed to put Scotland on the global map. Planning is underway, and I will be looking to the community for support and partnership in the new year to make this a reality.

Finally, a call to every single developer, freelancer, and student: We need your stories.

The narrative of 2026 cannot just be about politics and funding. It must be about the incredible games being made here. The studios, the events, the good work being created across the whole country.

Send us your news, your releases, your updates, and your milestones. Help us show the world why Scotland is more active – and creative – than ever. I’m looking for new writers and partners to expand our coverage into Company profiles, studio interviews, opinion pieces, thought leadership and sector analysis.

Have a safe, peaceful (and fun) well-earned break. The foundations are laid. Now, let’s all go build the future.

  11. #Movies #ActionHeroes . . .

We male #AAPI #ChineseAmericans have few positive male movie icons. heroes.

For us #Boomer Chinese-American, this was #BruceLee, who died far too young. Not only did he have a white wife, he was a "bad dude" & dispelled the negative sexual stereotypes of Asian men that still exist.

While I don't think he's the greatest Asian hero of all time, as the following article suggests, #ChowYunFat was a successor to Bruce & his partnership with John Woo is akin to that between Mifune & Kurosawa but while significant within the genre of Asian action films, far less groundbreaking than the Japanese collaboration was.

In any event, if you never seen #HardBoiled, #ABetterTomorrow & #Killer, you should make the effort to do so, because they are ground breaking movies in the modern #HongKongMovie genre & are essential to a full understanding of Asian action films.

The vehicles feature real-time passenger information, twin display screens and induction loops for hearing-impaired users, meeting PSVAR requirements, and carry Sargeants’ traditional red livery.

The order follows the operator’s first Enviro200 in 2025, with more now in service. Managing director Matt Evans cited suitability for rural routes, fuel efficiency and strong aftersales support as key factors.

Sargeants Bros operates around 45 buses across Herefordshire and #Powys. Since its 2019 acquisition, the fleet has grown significantly alongside expanded routes and investment in staff and technology. Alexander Dennis welcomed the repeat order and continued partnership.
