We male #AAPI #ChineseAmericans have few positive male movie icons. heroes.
For us #Boomer Chinese-American, this was #BruceLee, who died far too young. Not only did he have a white wife, he was a "bad dude" & dispelled the negative sexual stereotypes of Asian men that still exist.
While I don't think he's the greatest Asian hero of all time, as the following article suggests, #ChowYunFat was a successor to Bruce & his partnership with John Woo is akin to that between Mifune & Kurosawa but while significant within the genre of Asian action films, far less groundbreaking than the Japanese collaboration was.
In any event, if you never seen #HardBoiled, #ABetterTomorrow & #Killer, you should make the effort to do so, because they are ground breaking movies in the modern #HongKongMovie genre & are essential to a full understanding of Asian action films.

Heute gab es mal was klassisches vom Postmenschen. Der heilige Gral der „Heroric Bloodshed“ Welle der 90er Jahre, das Meisterwerk von John Woo. Hier wird nicht lange gefackelt, hier wird niemals nachgeladen, hier wird nur geballert, was die Berettas hergeben.
Und jetzt auch in 4k und auch legal im Gegensatz zu den deutschen Releases (Bootlegs).
Hach das waren noch Zeiten :)

Also my recollection of the chit chat in the opening scene is that the two cops explicitly reference Hong Kong's then approaching return to rule by mainland China as reasons why they might emigrate, something that did not feature in the version I saw last night.

I saw John Woo's Hard Boiled last night. still brilliant. But are the subtitles and perhaps even some of the dialogue different to when I saw it in the early 1990s? Memory is unreliable, but I recall the line "Your piss has saved my life" featuring.

I watched the 4K re-release of #JohnWoo's #HardBoiled (1992) last night at my local #AMC.
I had forgotten how violent the genre of Hong Kong action movies can be but the action is SO ridiculous that I view it as a parody that can't be taken seriously.
Viewed historically, this genre of films is a modern extension of the earlier Hong Kong #KungFuMovie genre where the heroes faced off with hundreds of combatants bare handed & killed or defeated all of them.
Hard Boiled is just like an old kung fu movie but the combatants use guns & explosives instead of their hands & feet.
Frankly, I got bored with all of the killing/combat after awhile because there was too much of a sameness to it all but various plot twists, played seriously & for comedic effect kept me interested.
It's not for everyone but in the genre of Hong Kong action movies, Hard Boiled is considered important & worth watching if you have an interested in them but not if you don't. 🤷♂️

The funny part about reading stories from the prohibition era, is they almost always are drinking like it isn’t the prohibition era.
Only occasionally does the illegality actually come up. Been reading a collection of early Dashiell Hammett, and it only just dawned on me that the entire collection was written during prohibition.

The Naked and the Deadly: Lawrence Block in Men's Adventure Magazines is a superb collection. For me the highlights are the three Ed London PI stories and the two Evan Tanner tales. So much pulp fun here. Early Lawrence Block is always a treat.

Lawrence Block’s 1965 crime novel The Girl with the Long Green Heart is about a con and I’m inordinately fond of that crime sub-genre. Block describes the grift in great detail and it’s a delight to read. Very noir and wildly enjoyable.

Charles Williams' novel Nothing in Her Way (1953) deals with a whole series of fascinating confidence tricks.
Intricate and skilful plotting, ingenious confidence tricks, characters with some depth, taut suspense, an ambiguous hero and a femme fatale - what more could you want? Highly recommended.
