  13. Day 12 of Advent of Type brings Agon. It is a deliberately cryptic font (A to Z and /period only). The name derives from both a-gon, a polygon, and agon as in agony and agonist. There is a little puzzle in this image, it makes a message when decoded. At least, it is a puzzle as long as you don't open the font file which of course makes the A to Z mapping clear.

Download, with all the previous fonts too, at drj11.itch.io/advent-of-type-2

  15. A bit late to the party but I didn't have time to look at this year's Adventure Jam before.
So my first recommendation would be #Powerhoof's excellent fantasy-adventures #TELWYNIUM Book Three.

Cool EGA-graphics, nice music, and absolutely awesome plot/character/puzzle-combo!
    👍

Now, book three is not complete right now, with the second half coming later this year, if I understood that correctly.
And this is really the only weak point of this amazing experience: It is too short! I desperately want more!
And, yes, it might be a bit on the easy side but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

    Highly recommended!

  16. May 22, 2023 - Day 142 - NewPlay Review
    Total NewPlays: 158

Game: Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders

    Platform: Steam
    Release Date: Feb 4, 2016
    Library Date: Mar 14, 2023
    Unplayed: 69d (2m8d)
    Playtime: 76m

    Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders is a point-and-click 2.5D puzzle/mystery game.

IIRC it came as a free mystery bonus gift with a Fanatical purchase.

The most annoying thing about it is that it absolutely sucked me to keep playing it. I've never read an Agatha Christie novel, and the only things I knew about Hercule Poirot is that the character is French, and has been played onscreen by David Suchet multiple times.

This is not a David Suchet voiced version of Poirot. Yet, 76 minutes in, and I've completed around a quarter of the game, in spite of having little desire to do so. It's just... scratching an itch.

I don't think it will be a particularly long game; the puzzles aren't overly complex (so far), I just can't understand quite why I felt so compelled to keep going until I completed the first chapter.

No connection to the character, no particular affinity to this kind of game, no emotional drive to play it, yet I'm going to probably keep playing it, which I find mildly irritating.

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders is:

    3: OK

    What is Tormented Souls 2?

Tormented Souls 2 on Steam is an old school feeling survival horror game out now on Steam.

    Story

The Walker sisters thought they were safe after the events at Wilderberger Hospital, but fate has other plans for them. Thinking they would get to enjoy a peaceful retreat in the mountains, the two sisters make their way to a secluded convent. Unfortunately, what meant to be therapy and relaxation turns into a nightmare. The trip was a setup, and Caroline now finds herself alone in a dark and empty building with creatures lurking in the shadow. With the help of her super natural abilities, and any supplies she finds along the way, she must find her sister and survive what ever darkness chases after her. Can she find her sister and leave this place before it is too late?

    Gameplay

Tormented Souls 2 is a 3rd person horror survival game modeled after the classic era of gaming. Players will explore the map looking for clues and supplies while avoiding danger. Tourmented Souls 2 is essentially an unforgiving puzzle game. This is a game where healing and ammo is limited, and being precise, stealthy and efficient is key. The game has combat with enemies that have specific weaknesses. Knowing the weaknesses is key to survival. You can brick your run if you aren’t careful, even on the easier difficulties. If you don’t pick items or do events in a certain order, you are going to have a bad time.

    Review

Tormented Souls 2 is a proper nod to the classic horror survival genre. Its horrifying atmosphere kept me completely on edge, while the story and puzzles kept me engaged. The biggest issue with the game is its difficulty. This is a hard and unforgiving game with very little saving. If you want a challenge game with a solid story that will scare you, Tormented Souls 2 is a solid choice.

    The Story

The game is a sequel, but you don’t need to play the first game to understand the events of the second. I definitely want to now because I want to know what happens, but I never felt like I lost by the story.

Tormented Souls 2 has an excellent horror story with some great voice acting. As scared as I got with the game, I had trouble putting it down because I needed to know what happened. The pacing is good, and if you can overcome the game’s difficulty, it is long enough to get the job done.

    Gameplay

Tourmented Souls 2 will scratch that Resident Evil itch we all get from time to time. The game is a little on the darker side. I think it is intentional, but it does make some parts of the game frustrating. The lack of camera control is also a point of frustration, but it’s fine for telling its story. The game’s difficulty is what makes the game hard to recommend. Tourmented Souls 2 is a dark and twisted puzzle. It is very unforgiving if you aren’t paying attention or if you don’t complete the tasks in order. The game doesn’t offer a lot of save points, so players will have to redo a lot of their progress.

The survival elements add a lot of tension to the game, and if you aren’t careful, a lot of stress. I was constantly low on health struggling to get to the next point, and that is going to turn off a lot of players. If you are new to the game, know that this is done by design. You might need to restart the game if you mess up like I did, so it might be good idea to look up a guide. I don’t like guides because I wanted to be surprised, but having to restart the game because there is literally nothing you can do to progress the game is frustrating.

    Conclusion

Tormented Souls 2 isn’t going to be for everyone. This is an unforgiving horror game that can be difficult if you aren’t careful and paying attention. Not being able to save often means there is a lot of repetition, but it also means you can strait up ruin a run. That said, the horror is very well designed. The atmosphere is spooky, the tension is choking, and the monsters are terrifying. I had a lot of trouble finishing this game because it freaked me out, but I also don’t do very well with horror games. Regardless, I liked the story enough to power through. I definitely think I need to check out the first one, but I don’t think it is necisarry. If you are looking for some good survival horror and don’t mind the difficulty, pick up Tormented Souls 2 on Steam.

  21. AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup – October 2025

    Introduction

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for visiting my blog, and for checking out this new issue of the AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup!

    My A1222+. Photo by Puni.

If you are new to this series (hi, and welcome!), it’s essentially a summary that covers the previous month’s news related to the AmigaOS 4 platform.

This month, October, has been jam-packed with events and news, almost too much to keep up with! News is spread on many channels, so there is a lot to keep track of, but that is part of the fun, and the reason they end up in a roundup like this. 😉

Anyway, October has been a FANTASTIC month for the AmigaOS 4 community, I dare to state that. It will be hard to top this for a while, I think!

Without further ado, let’s dive into what October was like in the world of AmigaOS 4!

    Software News

First up is ReSrc4 from René W. Olsen. This is a portable Amiga 68k hunk file disassembler. The source code is available on GitHub:

    https://github.com/rolsen74/resrc4

The archive can be fetched from OS4Depot:

AmiBrixx is a puzzle game for the Amiga, ported from the PC version called Joemine. It was brought over by Joerg Renkert. Version 2.31 is now available for download from OS4Depot. It supports skins, which means that you can change how the game looks in many ways!

    Screenshot by Puni

In a field of stacked stones, your target is to eliminate groups of stones of the same color. Thereby, the other stones will fall down and form new groups. The game ends when no more groups can be eliminated.

The game works very well, and I enjoyed testing it. I recommend that you give it a try if you enjoy puzzle games like this!

Kikems is back with version 1.0R7 of the next generation pixel editor for Amiga called Pixy. The original concept was created by Sinisrus, who worked on it in the years 2016 to 2020. Kimens from AmigaWave is now improving it further.

Pixy is a drawing program dedicated to pixel art and graphics with alpha channel transparency. It allows you to create several animations in a single project, and each image of each animation sequence contains its own layers. This makes it possible to work on all the animations of a character when creating video games, for example. The interface is intentionally inspired by Photoshop.

More information about Pixy, as well as a download, can be found here:

The changed source code you find in the source directory, it is based on the xero-driver from W. Hosemann. You can recompile it with different constants to genrate the special drivers.

The main new function of the driver’s is to provide a possibility to scroll also in horizontal direction, this is usesd, for example, in the directory windows or the notepad. This function is mapped to special hardware buttons. Check the hardware id’s with tools like usbinspector or devinfos(ng). the driver only works with this deticated hardware!

The gaming competition on Amigans.net for October and November is currently ongoing. These months, we are playing the brilliant arcade shoot’em up game Blastaway from Retream!

This game is available for purchase here:

    https://retream.itch.io/blastaway

At the moment, Walkero is in the lead, followed by 328gts. I’m a bit embarrassed to say that I’m currently in the last position, but that will hopefully change during November. 😉 Time will show!

If you’d like to take part in the competition or to read more about it, here is the link to the appropriate thread on Amigans.net:

The show Amiga 40 was held in Germany from October 17th to 19th.

Many reports from the event have been published, but for us AmigaOS 4 enthusiasts, I recommend heading over to the Rear Window blog to read Trixie’s “Glad in Gladbach” post.

There, he gives us a detailed travel report, packed with photos of many people in our community attending the event, either as visitors or as exhibitors.

    https://ko-fi.com/post/Glad-in-Gladbach-N4N21N487C

To complement this, there are many videos on YouTube covering the event. Here are a couple:

On Aminet, we can also see that A. Pankalla has released a set of special mouse drivers. He writes as follows:

This mouse drivers based on open-source code from diverse authors and was changed in two manners.

First, some functions are changed, because they deprecrated and second i changed some lines of codes to fit to severale mouse types.

    Misc

There is currently a poll running on Amigans.net. The aim of this one is to gauge what systems people are running AmigaOS 4 on. The poll is on the front page, on the right-hand side. I just submitted my votes, and I hope you will do the same. I’m curious how this one will end up!

    Oct 28th, 2025

SACRAMENTO, California – The Sacramento Amiga Computer Club is proud to present AmiWest 2025 on Nov 1st and 2nd. This is a special year for the Amiga Computer, launched by Commodore in 1985, marking the platform’s 40th anniversary. So far this year, Amiga enthusiasts have been treated to the AMIGA/040th in Silicon Valley and the Amiga40 in Germany, along with a host of other special events.

AmiWest, the longest-running Amiga show in the world, will be celebrating the Amiga’s 40th anniversary with a focus on the community. In place of a traditional show floor banquet, we will be traveling to a local Sacramento Burgers and Brew. In place of a conventional speaker, we will allow the attendees to share their Amiga Computer journeys and experiences.

The show floor will see several new exhibits joining our long-time supporters. We will have the Amiga “Lorraine” wire-wrap prototypes, the AMIGA/040th FutureWall, Tunefinder – Marcin Spoczynski, and more. We will also present AmigaOS 4 Update 3, the new Mirari PPC board, and AmigaOS 3.3 beta. To top it off, the A-Eon A1222+, motherboard and complete tower systems will be on sale at the AAA table!

For presentations, the show will have unique content:

Carl Sassenrath presents the history of the Amiga
    Jason Neus talking about AmiPCI
A-eon updates from Trevor Dickinson and Matthew Lehman
Steven Solie is providing an update on AmigaOS 4 multicore
    And more!

This mouse drivers based on open-source code from diverse authors and was changed in two manners.

First, some functions are changed, because they deprecrated and second i changed some lines of codes to fit to severale mouse types.

Compiled with GCC 11 (with –enable-sjlj-exceptions disabled), resulting in a noticeable speed boost

Integrated with the new clib4 memory allocator, improving memory handling and stability

Several internal optimizations to make the browser smoother and faster

Audio and Video playback are currently disabled in this Alpha build

    Important Notes

This is an Alpha version, and it’s still under active development.
That means some features may not work correctly or may cause crashes in specific conditions.

AmiWest 2025 is scheduled to take place this upcoming weekend. A press release was recently published on Amigans.net in connection with this:

On Aminet, we can also see that A. Pankalla has released a set of special mouse drivers. He writes as follows:

This mouse drivers based on open-source code from diverse authors and was changed in two manners.

First, some functions are changed, because they deprecrated and second i changed some lines of codes to fit to severale mouse types.

On Aminet, we can also see that A. Pankalla has released a set of special mouse drivers. He writes as follows:

This mouse drivers based on open-source code from diverse authors and was changed in two manners.

First, some functions are changed, because they deprecrated and second i changed some lines of codes to fit to severale mouse types.

    And more!

  26. Haunted Owlbear's Halloween Games, 2022/10/06 - If On a Winter's Night Four Travelers (Dead Idle Games, 2021)

This isometric point-and-click portmanteau horror game is the reason we're still running a day late on these reviews, because I was compelled to finish the entire thing. This was an excellent decision on my part. You'll get a couple of hours' gameplay out of it, if you set about things in a leisurely fashion.

Set in the late 1920s, If On a Winter's Night, Four Travelers is one of the most elegant works of horror fiction I've encountered in the medium, touching on both the existential and the personal. If you enjoy questioning the relationship between reality and perception, you'll have fun thinking this this one through after completion.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a game that's titled after a postmodernist novel (If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino) there's a literary feel here, but this is no book masquerading as a game.

You might be forgiven for assuming that after the first, very short, act, The Silent Room, in which we see the tragic unwinding of an illicit love affair between two men, as this part of the game is rather puzzle-light.

However, Act 2, The Slow Vanishing of Lady Winterborne, sees some inventive puzzle design kick in. There's no serious moon logic, but you'll have to follow the internal consistency of a person experiencing grief and drug/withdrawal induced delusions - patterns and sequenced order are important to her. This serious subject matter that is handled well here as we follow Lady Winterbourne as she struggles with memory, loss and an unquiet mind in the wake of tragedy.

Act 3, The Nameless Ritual, is a my personal highlight of this outstanding game, concerning a doctor who seeks solace in occult ritual. With strong themes of self-annihilation, redemption and once again that fuzzy middle ground between what reality might be and what we understand it has, this one really speaks to me. The puzzles in this act also fit the sense of ritual.

The fourth act presents a resolution to the anthology's wrapping device. It's short and ends in a sufficiently satisfying manner, although it leans into somewhat conventional mythology after the third act's esotericism.

We don't often see the portmanteau structure used in the games - I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream and, in a more serialised manner, Lamplight City, are the only adventuring gaming examples that immediately spring to mind, although I'm sure there are others. It's something I'd like to see more of, as the self-contained tales here never overstayed their welcome and provide the means to explore a range of engaging themes and puzzles.

The native Linux version of the game worked well on Pop!_OS 22.04. If you're playing on a higher resolution display, there are a couple of points where small objects can be hard to find amid the pixel art - hardly a surprise given the AGS engine's 320x200 resolution. These are rare, but I nonetheless wonder if I should have played this one on the Steam Deck. The game will run in ScummVM's AGS interpreter, which allows you to resize the window, if you'd prefer your pixel art a little more petite.

The art is, incidentally, excquisite, with particularly notable use of colour to reflect the characters' emotional landscapes.

I've seen some forum complaints about this, so will also note that AGS games are by nature pretty old-school in certain conventions - there are no auto-saves: invoke the menu and hit save before you quit.

If On a Winter's Night, Four Travelers carries content warnings for "thematic elements such as racism, homophobia, mental illness, murder and suicide." Its art book adds warnings about "pixel-graphic depictions of corpses, horror themes and war." See my next toot for an extra CW about a couple of extra personal triggers that I encountered, which constitute light spoilers.

There are no jumpscares, but there is some pixelart gore and a general tone of sombre tragedy.

If On a Winter's Night is a fascinating jewel of a game, and well worth your time.

  30. AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup – January 2026

    Introduction

Hi, and welcome to the first AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup in 2026! Thank you for visiting my blog. 🙂

I’ve implemented a few changes thanks to suggestions from readers. The most important one this time comes from Erikorh in the Amigans channel on Discord. He suggested headlines for each news item. I thought that was a great idea, so in this roundup I’ve given this a try. I hope this will make the text easier to navigate than previously. Thanks Erikorh!

If you have feedback of any kind concerning these roundups, please contact me through the Amigans forum or on the Amigans Discord. 🙂

Now, let us dive into the news.

    Software News

    Hollywood 11: Coderise

The biggest news in January was probably the release of Hollywood 11: Coderise. Here is the official press release from Airsoft Softwair.

Hollywood 11: Coderise is a massive update with lots of new features, optimizations and bug fixes. The most important new feature is that Hollywood 11 finally introduces a modular build system which will only link the libraries actually required by a script to the compiled program. This can drastically reduce executable sizes and is especially important on Amiga systems where memory is often limited. Hollywood 11 finally makes it possible to compile programs that fit on a single 880kb disk and run on a vanilla A1200! The new modular build system is made possible by a brand-new subsystem called Miniwood which, in contrast to Hollywood, allows scripts to only link the libraries actually required by the script to the output executable. Using Miniwood doesn’t only have advantages for Amiga users but also for users of other platforms: For example, if scripts don’t decide to load the display library, the program will also work on systems without X11, e.g. on pure terminal servers which was previously impossible.

Of course, the introduction of Miniwood isn’t the only new feature in Hollywood 11. There are many other exciting new things in Hollywood 11. Here are just a few of them:

    • introduction of Miniwood to massively reduce executable sizes
    • sound stream export is now possible
    • lots of new AmigaOS 3.2 features now supported
    • new AmigaOS-specific extensions like backdrop windows
    • support for the Linux arm64 platform
    • several improvements concerning layer grouping
    • audio recording support in different formats
    • samples can be extracted from music streams
    • optimized for Hollywood Designer 7
    • much more convenient capture of console output
    • much more effective compressor for smaller executables
    • lower memory consumption (important on classic AmigaOS)
    • tray menu support
    • monolithic compilation now supported for macOS arm64 systems
    • console mode supported on macOS as well now
    • GDK support on Linux
    • great enhancements for Android (scoped storage and MediaStore support)
    • implemented several new plugin interfaces
    • ready for at least 3 new Hollywood 11-exclusive plugins
    • over 100 new pages of PDF documentation, 1380 pages altogether!
    • lots of other changes, optimizations and bug fixes

Hollywood 11 is the ultimate Multimedia experience and a must-have for all creative people. Hollywood is available on CD and as a download version. Both versions include Hollywood for all supported platforms. Buying Hollywood gets you a single-user license for all 17 platforms supported by Hollywood. If you already own Hollywood, you can buy a discounted upgrade version.

Hollywood is the ultimate bridge between all the different AmigaOS compatible platforms and the other three modern desktop systems, Windows, macOS, and Linux! Additionally, Hollywood also supports the Android and iOS platforms. A truly unique feature is the ability to cross-compile native executables for many different platforms including: AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, WarpOS, MorphOS, AROS (x86), Windows (x86, x64), macOS (x86, x64, arm64, ppc), Linux (x86, x64, ppc, arm, arm64), and Android/iOS with optionally available add-ons. You don’t even have to own these platforms in order to compile executables for them. It’s enough to run Hollywood on one of the supported platforms and then compile programs for all the others! Only Hollywood makes it possible. If you want to learn more about Hollywood, please visit the the official Hollywood portal which also has a forum for all questions concerning Hollywood.

All this makes Hollywood The Cross-Platform Multimedia Application Layer. Join the Multimedia revolution and get your personal copy of Hollywood 11: Coderise now!

    Ubek

Version 1.1.2 of the first person shooter Ubek became available on OS4Depot on January 6th. There, we can read the following:

“Ubek is a remake of a commercial fps game released for classic Amiga in 1995 by Twink Spark Soft. The main idea behind the remake is to make it convenient and pleasing to play on modern systems, while preserving 100% of the original graphics, puzzles and story.

The main programmer, author of the original and remake is Szymon Ulatowski, Marek “Smakrusg” Glogowski helped in porting the game to AmigaOS 4. In addition, musicians Albert Czochara and Remigiusz Kolasa also contributed to the sound design of the Ubek. The game’s beta tester was Rafal Chyla, who also created the icons and helped prepare the documentation.”

Features of the new version include:

    • Modern high resolution, 60 fps
    • 3D hardware acceleration (using GL4ES)
    • Graphics improvements, including a better look for weapons or hero characters (you can switch to classic mode, which looks like the 1995 original)

    • Control enhancements – keyboard plus mouse or optional (tooltype option) gamepad using analog knobs
    • The location of the level exit is visible on the radar
    • Improvements in better weapon range and effectiveness

    • Added safeguards against accidental destruction of critical objects (e.g., keys) needed to complete a level.
    • Added option to quickly save and load
    • Many other minor fixes and improvements to make gameplay easier and the game better in general

    RNOEffects

Version 2.1 of the brilliant RNOEffects by jPV^RNO has been released. 🙂

RNOEffects is an image processing program with a focus on good batch conversion options and alpha channel-based effects.

It runs on AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AmigaOS 3 (68K/WOS), and AROS.

Version 2.1 includes the following changes:

    • Added a new view mode to display images at their actual resolution in a
      scrollable window area
    • Graphical displays are hidden during window resizing, which improves speed
and flexibility on systems that resize windows with full contents
    • Added the “Palette editor” tool for modifying, setting, or removing palettes
    • Whole directories can be added into the batch conversion list with the Add
button or just drag’n’drop from OS windows
    • Batch resizing can keep the aspect ratio of an original image
    • Added an option to disable redrawing during a batch conversion to speed up
the process on lower end setups
    • Added a progress gauge in the batch conversion window
    • Zoom level can be changed in the Pixel Editor
    • Pixels can’t be drawn “out-of-bounds” in the Pixel Editor window
    • Palette images are converted to RGB images only when needed or requested
    • Added a setting to reload saved images back into the editor to reflect
changes caused by any image conversion process during saving
    • Added an option to convert RGB images to palette images with Quantize effect
    • Window title indicates if an image is an (A)RGB or Palette image
    • Almost all effects work with palette images now, though some options may not
work exactly as with RGB images
    • The Clear option detects the image colour format
    • The Color Picker tool shows the palette pen alongside the RGB values
    • Brush and text drawing can be locked to borders/corners/centre, which makes
it easier to add watermarks, etc. to varying image dimensions
    • Setting co-ordinates for the Draw effect by mouse over the image can be
constrained vertically or horizontally by pressing Shift or Ctrl keys
    • The “j” key swaps main and buffer images (as used in DPaint and PPaint)
    • Added presets for Amiga WB 1.x, 2.x, Rebel, and PeterK/IconLib palettes
    • Added presets for resolutions on Resize and Crop windows, the last applied
resolution is shown as the first item in the preset list
    • Width and height values can be swapped in Resize and Crop windows
    • A cropped image can be copied to the internal buffer instead of applying the
      effect to the current image
    • Buffer changes are refreshed on effects that use the buffer image
    • Color Picker and Area Selector tools broke some effects like elliptical crop
    • Transparency level can be set on the Background effect
    • Improved error handling
    • Other minor fixes and changes
