  1. It's about that time again, as we enter into #Spooktober season, we take the time to play spooky games all October long, and today's VOD has us jumping back into some ghost hunting with #Phasmophobia with the Ghost Crew!

It's crazy how much the game updated by this point, and from what I've seen recently the game has gotten even more crazy! So many new ghost types, tools, and all the updates to the maps both old and new make this quite the spooky sandbox!

  3. But broadly it holds up - granted the parapsychologist and the skeptic are shaky: it captivates the feel of long-form live TV a bit *too* well (ie it sags in a very genre-appopriate way) and calling Mr Pipes' cupboard a "glory hole" has aged poorly, especially for a story where kids are integral - but the ending is genuinely creepy and it's also a spot-on parody of that kind of telly.

Not amazing but very solid, worthy of rotation.

  4. Bit of a late #Spooktober #MovieNight for you all, between Halloween and Bonfire Night. Watched Ghostwatch - only 33 years and a couple of days late.

Obviously with the pretence of it being a live recording of Enfield Poltergeist-style ongoings it loses something in watching it late. Even the "live" Inside No. 9 was so much better on the night vs a rewatch, and that's one of the 2010s' finest shows.

  5. Los #fantasmas nos han acompañado desde siempre. En #Mesopotamia, o tenías una buena muerte y podías disfrutar de una monótona vida como la que conocías, o te quedabas entre los vivos actuando acorde a la causa de tu muerte. #spooktober #halloween

"Thump, thump." Something woke Claire and Rae in the middle of the night

Rae grabbed Claire, shivering. “Did you hear that? “Footsteps! On-on-on the roof.”

For once, Claire didn’t push her away. “There’s someone up there,” she hissed. “Go see what it is?”

Rae pried her arms off and got out of bed.

    “Splash, squish.”

“There’s water!” Rae’s voice was shrill as she stepped into a puddle of water by the bed. “A ghost’s been here.” [Note: In Japan, ghosts are associated with water. When one visits you, it often leaves a puddle of water behind.]

Claire crept out of bed. “Squish, splash.”

In the moonlight, Rae could see Claire biting her lip. Her hand trembled as she grasped Rae’s.

“There’s something in the garden.” Claire’s voice squeaked.

    “Garden?” Rae muttered to herself.

Claire tugged on Rae’s hand. “We need to find out what it is. The kids. We have to protect them.”

Rae followed Claire through the shadowy house.

    “Rattle, rattle, bang.”

Claire shrieked as the pots and pans in the kitchen danced.

Rae chuckled to herself. This was going much better than she’d expected. Claire had swallowed the bait: hook, line, and sinker. She was even imagining things out in the garden. Rae hadn’t even put anything in the garden. This was a whole new #level of teasing!

Rae opened the door and stopped. In the garden, a ghostly head floated amid the weeds at the garden's edge. Its eyes and mouth flickered like dying candles. It was a face that was stamped indelibly in her mind, synonymous with villainy.

“Salas Lilium,” Rae muttered. “Returned for revenge, no doubt.”

She squeezed Claire’s hand and said in a low voice, "#Joint attack." Then, she charged out of the house shouting, “Team Claire!” The door slammed behind her.

Gales of laughter spilled out, not from the apparition but from Claire.

“Surprise,” Claire sputtered between peals of laughter. “You didn’t think you were going to fool me this time, did you?”

Under the pumpkin, which was carved to look like Salas, Rae found warm blankets and cushions.

Rae smiled. Claire was the kindest, loveliest bully she’d ever known.

  9. Haunted Owlbear's Halloween Games, 2022/10/16 - Marginalia (2017, Connor Sherlock & Cameron Kunzelman)

Set deep in the woods of the US state of New England, Marginalia is an elegant walking simulator that really does make you feel like you're lost in a forest.

At first, red lampposts mark out a forest trail, each conjuring a new, fully voiced, narrative snippet. As you start piecing together the nature of the forest and memories that you're exploring, both the glowing markers that guide you through the dark and the story of the narrator's missing boyfriend begin to take on a stranger, more otherworldly tenor with shades of cosmic horror.

There are no jump scares, and the mood is one of ominous mystery, rather than full-on terror as you explore the vast forest. The ambient soundtrack is excellent and, for me, brought to mind Cult of Luna's more synth-driven moments.

Marginalia takes just over half an hour to complete, and there are no alternate endings (unless, like me, you fall off a big cliff and end up accidentally exploring a ravine instead of the mountain peak that everything's leading to).

Either way, the story is the same. The narrative is static. Interaction and emergent gameplay elements here are all about how you explore the deep woods. I managed to get myself turned around in the darkness, a familiar experience to anyone who's taken a half-familiar road too late in the day.

Marginalia a one-shot with no saves and no restarts, bar Steam Deck's suspend. However, you'll probably want to play this one straight through without too many distractions.

I had a fun time with it on the Steam Deck while keeping someone else company, but it's much more absorbing on a big ultrawide display, or at least in a dimly lit room, all alone.

Buy it on itchio for $6: connor-sherlock.itch.io/margin (includes the fantastic OST and a Steam key, get this one!) If you bought the Bundle For Ukraine in March 2022, you already have a copy (sans Steam key).

Alternatively, buy it on Steam for 4.99€: store.steampowered.com/app/889

Housekeeping note: Review dates are now going to match publication date, rather than game-played date. I'm going to stop playing catch-up and put any currently-incomplete reviews on the forthcoming Haunted Games blog.
