I was raised in a Dutch family of cryptic crossword puzzlers. So when I encountered English cryptic crosswords, they felt wrong to me. The general ideas are the same, but the way the clues are set up is different.

The English ones are generally quite complicated, but the parts fit together like clockwork. You can systematically peel away the layers—if you know the rules. If you don't, they seem ridiculously convoluted.

The Dutch ones feel more playful to me, but also looser in construction. There will be more words that only serve to link the significant parts, and not every clue contains a definition. I suppose that makes them less technical, but also less convoluted and more accessible. Or maybe that's just my bias.

Also, if you do happen to be stumped by one, there is no system to fall back on.

In any case, I've done a little crash course for the English ones, so I enjoy both now 😁
