I’m pretty sure Ive only ever watched it on VHS or YT. It has it all.. #submarines #coldwar #practicaleffects and for once low Reynolds number #fluidmechanics is appropriate. 🤪
When i give general talks on the oceans to public audiences i often use a movie as a familiar prop to ease people in at the same time as giving their preconceptions a nudge 😎.. ive used this one a few times. It provides excellent service.

Wanted to do this photo primarily to see if I could create a practically shot bullet hole and I'm really pleased with how it came out just using a piece of black card with a hole in it and some tin foil around the edges then lit with an orange light and voila a Guardians of the Galaxy scene created!

They say they have chosen to use physical models to inform the vfx and vice versa as well as to assist the directors and actors during production. For the enormous Titan X, they have created selected pieces of the creature’s body at full scale to illustrate texture and to inform production.
This new ‘behind the scenes’ featurette should be interesting to all those interested in the making of practical and virtual effects in addition to those watching the show (although there are spoilers).

The 1990 Total Recall is one of my favorite movies, and I didn't know David Cronenberg was the original director for it and created the character of Kuato and all the mutants (although it makes perfect sense). The puppet itself was created by Rob Bottin.

I want this bird to be practical effects (ie a giant puppet), partly because it's a bit stiff in close ups, and partly because I love that stuff. But I think it's CGI and it's really well done! More and more C-dramas I watch has VFX that is less Nice (genuinely meant) Try and more Wow!.

This week was the first time I've noticed that, in "Alien", in the shot where they cut the facehugger and acid blood comes out, the floor has the very distinctive structure of a sheet of styrofoam, easily dissolved by some chemicals.
And sure enough, that's what they were using. The blood itself was "mainly composed of chloroform, acetone, cyclohexylamine and acetic acid, with other compounds in minor quantities".

#TheFifthElement came out in 1997 and it still holds up as a story, #film, including with the #SpecialEffects. Especially considering that most of the effects in the movie were #PracticalEffects and not CGI.
They don't make #movies like The Fifth Element any more and that's a crying shame. -

Warning: it's super gory, like, exploding people, smashed skulls... definitely not my type of movie but it's very interesting to hear about all those editing tricks they did. Even cutting from a set to a miniature version of the set during a whip pan! Moreover, the director shows some tiny fixes that blow up the VFX shot count nowadays.
