I disagree. In this case it kind of actually worked for the amount of detail you would not have got in landscape mode, with lots of useless scenery on the sides. The pan in this *video* does half the job that a landscape *still* couldn't possibly have captured, and a landscape *video* would not have added anything.

  4. I didn’t get scammed!

The lens got a bit damaged during the shipping, so I’ll have to take it to repair next week, but it works and the picture is beautiful!

Sure T2.8 is not the fastest lens I got, but I typically film in controlled environment so an extra step of lighting isn’t hard to make.

  6. I usually blur eye contact (because why not? why sit on a chance to be kind?), and _boy_ does this movie make me work for it! The characters are talking to the camera all the time. This is one of the reasons the story hits you in the chest; you're treated as you're part of it. But I have to admit it's a small relief to have a character I can leave as is.

  7. I like weird films and directors, and Jim Jarmusch is definitely one of them.
Coffee and Cigarettes is one of those—just people talking about nothing and everything at the same time.

Today I watched Only Lovers Left Alive. The soundtrack, the cinematography, the atmosphere... it's one of those films where the mood is just as important as the story. Beautiful from beginning to end.

  12. incredible article, now 25 years old, on the lighting and cinematography of Conrad Hall & Sam Mendes' Road To Perdition.

"The palette for the movie was very muted," Mendes says. "Very early on, Conrad and I talked about creating a sense of great contrast within images by using hard light from the side and chiaroscuro. We wanted dark backgrounds and dark sets with dark, muted greens and grays.

"For example, he'll use black silk for daylight exteriors because it cuts a perfect amount of light to make a scene look as though it's in the shade. White silk makes light flare, but black silk doesn't bring all that flare back and doesn't fill the whole scene up with fill light. On this film, we never shot in harsh sunlight; we always used black silks to dim down the scene and then relit it the way Conrad wanted it to look. He also uses different papers and double softs, and mixes hard and soft light almost constantly."

  16. #Cinematography in 1902 was nowhere near advanced enough to fake a moon landing so we have to accept Georges Méliès' "Le voyage dans la lune" as a record of the first successful French moon shot.

It's a shame that they lost their moon base to the Germans in 1940 & never got it back.

  17. Loved Disclosure Day. Was really good. One thing that really stuck out to me as a cinematography nerd was the shot where one of the characters was going to save another character but the shot goes from like a hub shot down to the person crawling aside a a fence on the other side and then crosses back over and follows the person into the car.

Only thing that I can assume they did was use a drone and then handheld it. I was super impressed. #cinematography #disclosureday #film

  18. Massive Project Expansion in Update 1.15.0

I’m honestly pretty stoked about this one. I finally managed to complete the Projects workflow. Well, I say "for now," because I’ve already thought it was done a few times before, only to realize it wasn’t. God only knows if it ever truly will be. Either way, this is starting to feel like a seriously advanced app. I’m still battling with the design a bit, trying to make it feel cohesive. On one hand, I like where it’s going, but on the other, there are still things I haven’t entirely made peace with, so expect more tweaks down the line. But that’s a story for another day. Let's look at what's new in the app today.
