  1. #NowWatching : #TotalRecall (1990)

This morning I read the #PhilipKDick story ("We Can Remember It For You Wholesale"), so now I've gotta watch the movie. 😂

Plus, anything from 1990 is guaranteed to have some peak #Schwarzenegger , and for #Verhoeven , it sits between #Robocop and #StarshipTroopers , so I'm expecting a lot from him as well.

  2. The 1990 Total Recall is one of my favorite movies, and I didn't know David Cronenberg was the original director for it and created the character of Kuato and all the mutants (although it makes perfect sense). The puppet itself was created by Rob Bottin.

  3. The Thirteenth Floor (1999) was a great concept but the execution (the acting and dialogue) weren't the greatest - and this is coming from me, who watches and doesn't mind a lot of B movies. This one could really do with a modern remake. Simulation etc type stuff. I can just imagine this remade now, but so much better 😂

  4. Considered a lot of flicks I haven't checked out to take in today, both older and newer, but settled on 1997's 'The Relic'. I always want weird monstery creature features over anything else, and this sounds like it is. And it has Tom Sizemore (RIP).

  5. We were talking at chez nous about the 90s film, Scent of a Woman this week and lo and behold it’s on Netflix. I only saw it when it came out in the cinema and had totally forgotten it’s over 2 hours 30 minutes in length.

  6. Not only because this image looks like how it feels to be living in the world lately, but also because 31 years ago today (February 3) in 1994, In the Mouth of Madness was released in USA theaters.

  7. I made one 'thunder bolts of lightning' joke to Son2 last night (which he witheringly refused to engage with) and the next thing you know it went all Wayne's World in the kitchen as Queen's greatest hits soundtracked my cooking.

  8. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995): My memory- who knows if accurate- of public view at release was it came too late in short-lived #western revival cycle, and people wanted Sharon Stone in, um, more salacious situations. Seen now, it’s an entertaining ride. I miss Hackman, he’s deliciously evil as Sharon’s foil. Some of the over-the-topness borders on wacky, and I could do without those very 90s zoom-in shots. But it’s fast moving, fun with an explosive (whoops spoiler alert!) finish. #90sfilms

  9. A SINGLE GIRL (’95): Benoit Jacquot has really grown on me as I’ve explored his films, and this is the best one I’ve come across yet. Outstanding performance from Virginie Leyoden as a young pregnant woman on first day of job at luxury hotel. If there’s such a thing as “very French New Wave”, this is it. The hotel scenes are particularly fascinating, with Leyoden communicating so much of her story through subtle facial expressions. Unfairly under the radar. #frenchfilm #90sfilms

  10. FLIRT (’95): This started out so great- Parker Posey laying in bed in NYC, contemplating leaving her boyfriend for a man who, turns out, is also interested in a married woman. Snappy, clever dialogue and surprising twists. Then it plays out again two more times, with different people/setups, in Berlin and Tokyo. I guess this was an experiment, a potentially interesting academic exercise- but entertainment value fell greatly after the first segment. #90sfilms

  11. FLESHTONE (’94): Low budget erotic thriller that reminds me to stay away from those phone sex lines. Painter (of some weird stuff) answers ad, ends up falling for girl on the line, and you just know that’s going nowhere good. Supposedly filmed in South Africa, which would explain why LA and Kansas City look the same. It does deliver on the erotic part, but otherwise it’s nothing special, and unsatisfying ending does it no favors. #90sfilms

  12. BOUND (1996): I hadn’t revisited this one since the days of its first release on VHS, but limited time #CriterionChannel streaming, in their Erotic Thrillers series, provided me prime impetus. WOW. Even better than I had remembered it. Just loved how gorgeously shot, and framed, this was. Sexually charged from that first frame on, and they didn’t skimp on the thriller aspects of this either. Terrific. #90sfilms

  13. CASINO (’95): I often hear the complaint of Scorsese “just making the same gangster movie over and over”. Oh if only that were true. I could watch a hundred of these, always find myself lost in the portraits he paints so vividly. Plus, you layer gambling (another fave movie subject of mine) on top of gangsters- winner. Sharon Stone is great. And just like I felt after watching THE IRISHMAN, I really miss regular visits on the screen from Joe Pesci. #90sfilms
