  1. I bought several #artwork pieces from art students at the Ladysmith arts council garage sale, this past Sunday.
These are 4 of the wooden block paintings that I got. I will post more of the other paintings bought, soon.

  2. Hindu Business Line: Culture Ministry partners with YouTube to train folk artists in digital skills. “The culture ministry and YouTube on Wednesday signed an MoU under which the firm will equip Indian folk artists with essential digital skills that will help them document, digitise and share the country’s rich cultural heritage with both domestic and global audience.”

The old symbol is told to be for protection and good luck, and according to one interpretation, the four loops on the symbol depict the spirits of the four cardinal directions, which support the heaven above the earth. (taivaannaula.org)

  4. I heard there was some graffiti on the old slate-built bus stop on the road to Dinorwig Quarry the other day.

Though it was around freezing, windy and with snow on the tops of Eryri, I nevertheless got some good shots.

This well-executed figure is a fairly common type in the north Wales slate belt. Based on other dated graffiti at the site, it's likely 1950s or 1960s.

  5. The symbol is known in Finland/Karelia as Siivilänpesonen, but I also found the same symbol in old Ukrainian folk art, where it is called Krynytsia (Well).
The meaning to the symbol is told to be:
The well, marked by crossed diagonal lines, symbolizes the link between worlds - like a real well that draws not just water, but ancestral memory. Alongside it, the fertility rune invokes abundance and continuity of life.

  6. Not so long ago, in the small border village of Braxton, there was a remarkable collection of 200 or so life sized animal sculptures, moulded in concrete/cement and hand painted. They were created by John Farringdon for his sick son, and became an obsession. I thought it had gone forever, but it's now being restored and will have a safe permanent home in Ayton Castle, Berwickshire. aytoncastle.co.uk/projects.htm

  7. Horsecart painting, a folk art rooted in the Ottoman ornamentation tradition that once shaped regional visual culture, has largely been disappeared. In this article (in Turkish), I documented the life and work of Enver Ertaban, one of the last commercial painters in the city of Bursa, in an attempt to preserve the memory of this lost visual tradition.

  8. While at the Seattle Japanese Garden, we viewed a small art exhibit of Kiri-E, the Japanese folk art of cut-paper art. Basically it is drawing an image on paper, then cutting it out with a sharp knife. Endlessly fascinating to wander through viewing all the exquisitely detailed cut-paper art. #art #kiri-e #Japanese #cutpaperart #cutoutimages #paperart #paper #folkart
