  1. "Since masters of the genre like Jin Yong penned their epics, there has been a growing female wuxia authorship that speaks to increased cultural confidence, a diversity of voices, and all-new takes on classic settings."

  2. When I reached middle age I noticed something that previously had flown over my head; middle aged women are set in evil roles, and their agression is directed toward younger women. If they're in main roles things may be different, but for side characters (in crime fiction for example) the statistics is nearly 100%. That's why mrs Yao is a big relief, so far she's been smack on Changyu's side. She's also one of several, which is even better.

  6. I didn't really know anything about , so this was fascinating. I know Tarantino was a huge fan, but that's about it. And I saw Crouching Tiger 😅 Put this on the list!

  7. Are you interested in wuxia literature? A new translation to English is available, for free! I'm not personally involved, just a happy fan of it all.

Boost and spread the word to like minded, please.

  8. For some reason, I couldn't quite get through #TheValiantOnes in one sitting. I kept losing the thread; the story is surprisingly complex, yet fragmented and seamlessly woven into a multitude of classic #MartialArts / #Wuxia action scenes. The double showdown is fantastic. #movies #filmsky

  9. I’m watching #TheValiantOnes by #KingHu for the first time in ages. I’m a fan; I love #martialarts and #wuxia #movies. It’s a classic. Let's see how I like it today. #filmsky

  10. Even though I’m tempted to just continue the list of books for the Readmoo challenge, I decided to take a break, and read something else.

I’m starting 流星·蝴蝶·剑 by Gu Long (古龙). My first wuxia novel!! :blob_hype: (Thanks again @jiewawa for the recommendation!)

Gu Long is a Taiwanese author, but strangely none of his books are available on Readmoo? It was on 微信读书, so I’m reading it in Simplified Chinese.

  11. I haven't been able to write a full review of a Cdrama for several months, but I posted my thoughts on all the recent Cdramas I've watched since late last year in the SF-Fandom forums.

  12. A survey on readers' experiences reading wuxia (especially Jin Yong's works) in English: app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s

The researcher is a PhD student who says he's having trouble finding enough people to contribute, so let's help him out. :) reddit.com/r/JinYong/comments/

  13. I watched Hero (2002) this afternoon and was blown away by it.

The whole movie had an almost dreamlike quality to it and it was visually stunning.

The scene in the calligraphy school with the rain of arrows and the sword fight on the lake were particularly memorable.

Anyone got any other wuxia film recommendations? I have Crouching Tiger and House of the Flying Daggers lined up, and recently watched Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain.

  17. CW: Food mention (Strange Chronicles of Tang)

A: this is an awesome composition! It deserves its place in the vignette.

B: it reminds me of the time I worked at a chocolate factory putting truffles in neat lines in boxes. During breaks we _all_ put our lunch boxes and thermoses in straight rows out of sheer habit.

(Yes, we were allowed to eat as much chocolate as we wanted. No, I didn't. Those who did gained A Lot of weight.)

  22. Blogkino: Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman (1971)

  23. Meanwhile some of us in Pacific-Asia who've been watching #Cdrama (especially #Wuxia genre) since the 80s are going somewhere else: #Tdrama / #ThaiDrama. Some are also coming back to #Jdrama, and also discovering #Pdrama.

  24. So seated for this drama. I am sceptical about Gong Jun's acting chops but at least our Umbrella Assassin isn't known for expressiveness 🤣.

This is a spin off of one of my fav modern wuxias ever, Blood of Youth. Glad that the English department is using the "Blood" theme to good use and am avoiding the Blossom thing lol.

I am not sure how much it will reflect Tales of the Dark River and I hope somehow they could translate that magic in Blood of Youth here.

  25. For me, The #GreenBoneSaga is undoubtedly one of the best #fantasy / #urbanfantasy (?) book series of recent years. I'm also really into #martialarts (e.g. #KungFuHustle) and #wuxia films. A well-made #JadeCity role-playing game could be something for me. #ttrpg

  26. You can listen to the excellent soundtrack for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) composed by Tán Dùn and performed by Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (with some help from Yo-Yo Ma !!) here (youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK)

  27. Thinking about introducing my 9 1/2 yo to the world of #wuxia films. Especially with #DaNü (female heroes). Thinking about „Hero“ or „Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“ to start with. Any other suggestions? (Have to have a German dub though)

"So, what's your job at Heng Dian World Studios?"

  30. BTS fotage from China and Korea is a culture shock for me. What I want is interesting semi-documentaries of how the drama was made*, what C- and K drama serves are plopping sound effects, cutsie decals, and humorous pointers. Ah well - who am I to rearrange someone elses living room? Haven't seen these before, so I'll better get used to it.

(*Granted, it's not always good documentaries for Western movies etc - but sometimes you get lucky.)
